HP FlexibleLOM for Gen8

In past server generations, the adapter is embedded on the system motherboard as a LOM (LAN on motherboard).  If a customer desired a different kind of networking adapter, they would need to purchase a standup adapter and install it in a slot in the server.  This meant consuming valuable mezzanine or PCI slots which reduced their flexibility to add other mezzanine cards or PCI cards.

Now with many ProLiant Gen8 servers, our customers can now choose the type of network adapter they want.  This new Flexible LOM provides our customer the ability to customize their server’s networking of today and the ability to change to meet future needs without overhauling server infrastructure.

HP is introducing 1 and 10Gb Flexible LOMs and in different fabrics - Ethernet, Fiber Channel over Ethernet, Infiniband.  We have partnered with a variety of suppliers like Broadcom, Emulex, Intel, Mellanox and QLogic.  Like the traditional LOMs, Flexible LOM supports Wake-On-LAN and for the rack space - shared iLO port.

To find out if the server of choice supports Flexible LOM, please check the server QuickSpecs or use HP iQuote , the channel Sales and Quotation Service found on www.hp.com/go/iQuote.  If you order a BTO server, you can order the Flexible LOM options and configure the BTO server to match your customer requirements.

If I had trouble reading, that video may have been useful. I wanted to see it what it actually does. Like:

  • How would you, for example, change it from Ethernet to Fibre Channel?.
  • How many ports do you get?
  • Is it a matter switching adapters?
  • If so, what adapters come standard?
  • Or is it done in software?
  • Or both?
  • Can they be switched live?

After having read the text and (redundantly) watched the video, I still don't know what these FlexibleLOM's are.

Bob - we'll be getting you these answers - thanks for asking

Bob,

Here's information from SanSan:

  • How would you, for example, change it from Ethernet to Fibre Channel?

We have different flavors of FlexibleLOM adapters – those that do straight Ethernet 1G and 10G, those that support Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), and those that support Flex-10 (or NIC partitioning).  Adapters that support FCoE are called HP FlexFabric adapters.  For the ProLiant Gen8 Blade servers, FCoE adapters support straight Ethernet, Flex-10, or FCoE.  Configurations and bandwidth allocation are managed via the Virtual Connect management tool.  For the ProLiant Gen8 DL & SL servers, FlexFabric adapters are shipped with both ports supporting Ethernet and FCoE.  Flex-10 functionality is not supported on adapters for the Gen8 DL & SL servers.  For more information on the adapters, please do visit this website www.hp.com/go/ProLiantNICs.  You can also contact us directly to set up a call at coffeeco@hp.com if you still have questions.

  • How many ports do you get?

On the 1G FlexibleLOM, the adapter comes with 4 ports.  On the 10G Ethernet, Flex-10 or FlexFabric FlexibleLOM, the adapter comes with 2 ports.

  • Is it a matter switching adapters?

The main benefit of FlexibleLOM is that customers can change out or upgrade from the 1G to the 10G FlexibleLOM adapter at any time.

  • If so, what adapters come standard?

In the ProLiant Gen8 Blade servers BTO SKUs (or preconfigured models), the FlexFabric adapter is standard on most of these models.  To get the latest update on the preconfigured models, please check the QuickSpecs of the Gen8 Blade servers.  If you go the CTO (configure to order) route, you choose the FlexibleLOM.  In the ProLiant Gen8 DL & SL servers, the preconfigured models do come with 1G or 10G.  You choose the FlexibleLOM for CTO.

  • Or is it done in software?

To change the personality of FlexFabric adapters for ProLiant Gen8 Blade servers, this can be done via the Virtual Connect management tool.

  • Or both?

Hope above answers this question.

  • Can they be switched live?

Hope above answers this question.

The main reason why we introduced FlexibleLOM to this Gen8 servers is provide the flexibility to our customers.  The adapter is not embedded in the server motherboard.  The adapter is now in a modular form factor that goes into a special slot/connector of the server.  Customer can choose what they currently need; and upgrade at a later time by removing this FlexibleLOM adapter and plugging another one.

Hello,

can you tell me what is the difference between two form factors

mezzanine and FlexibleLOM form factor?

Xani | ‎05-18-2012 04:55 PM

Vladimir,

For Gen 7 and earlier ProLiant servers, the LOM is embedded on the motherboard.  Starting with Gen 8 servers, the LOM is a removable module and is referred to as the FlexibleLOM.  The FlexibleLOM form factor is different between Blade and Rack and Tower servers and are not interchangeable.

C-Class Blade servers have always utilized mezzanine cards for their I/O options.  Gen 8 mezzanine cards have a different form factor than the Gen 7 and earlier mezzanine cards and are not interchangeable.

FlexibleLOMs and mezzanine cards are not interchangeable.

Hope this is helpful, however if you still have questions contact us directly to set up a call at coffeeco@hp.com.
