WMS comes in Standard and Premium editions as well as a variety of license types: Academic, Volume and OEM. Microsoft offers a planning guide for WMS, for more details see Microsoft’s - Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 Planning Guide.

Here is a quick list of things to consider for a WMS deployment:

  1. Is your environment Academic or Commercial?  Academic licensing for HP comes in the form of a HP OEM MultiSeat ms6000 desktop series as the host.  For commercial customers, who are working with their Reseller, HP recommends the usage of the Premium edition ROK with HP ProLiant entry level servers
  2. How many stations do you need to connect to the host?  10 or less consider Standard edition; 20 or less consider Premium edition; more than 20 consider multiple instances of WMS.
  3. Does your environment need to redeploy an existing machine for the host?  If so, consider Volume Licensing.  If not consider OEM licenses.  If a Volume license is used with WMS Premium edition, don’t forget you will need a WMS client and Windows RDS CAL for each device.
  4. Are your stations going to be HP’s zero or thin clients?  Or a redeployment of existing hardware?  If new clients are needed, consider the HP MultiSeat solutions that include client options.   Or work with your HP reseller to determine if you want to redeploy stations; however, you must purchase in a WMS CAL for these devices.  HP’s OEM WMS 2011 Premium edition ROK comes with one Admin CAL.   If you are using a WMS 2011 Microsoft Volume License for your environment you must purchase the WMS CAL and a Windows Server CAL.
  5. How do you need to connect to the host?  USB direct connect, Video card direct connect and LAN are the various options for connectivity to the host.  With ProLiant Servers the best choice is LAN; MultiSeat offers all connection types.

Tip: When selling a MultiPoint Server 2011 Premium edition license, the clients/devices must have a CAL for WMS 2011 as well as a Windows Server 2008 R2 CAL. With OEM solutions, the Windows Server 2008 R2 CAL is not required.

Language Packs

While the HP Premium ROK kit is only in ENGLISH, WMS fully supports installing any languages of WMS and then adding Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 language packs. You can then change the language on a per user basis so you could have one station working in English, one in Spanish and one in French for example.

Page 39 of the Deployment Guide has some additional information on adding additional language packs.
