Key points of the new BL465c Gen8 ProLiant Server.

Hello folks,

Today we'll meet Darren Anthony, HP Worldwide Product Marketing Manager for the HP ProLiant BL465c Server Blades.

In this session of Coffee Coaching he will going to introduce the new BL465c Gen8 server blade and I’ll be sharing with our reseller audience a few exciting details about this new server.

The BL465c is the first server blade to deliver over 2,000 cores per rack. Continuing the legacy of previous generations; with enhanced innovations in performance, flexibility in networking options, and robust management features, the BL465c Gen8 is the price/performance choice for virtualized enterprise data centers.

As the ideal server for virtualization and consolidation, IT infrastructure (such as file & print, networking, security, and systems management), and High Performance Computing workloads, this Gen8 server blade delivers a unique blend of core density combined with a large memory footprint in a half-height form factor.

The workloads I just mentioned can run under a wide variety of supported operating systems, including Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Small Business Server 2011.

Now that we’ve done a quick introduction let’s jump into the key features for this generation blade and the value it delivers to customers.

The BL465c Gen8 continues the success of the previous generation with the AMD Opteron 6200 series processors. This family of processors, built for performance, scalability, and efficiency for today’s demanding environments, provide 4, 8, 12, or 16 cores and up to 3.3GHz processor speeds.

This Gen8 server blade supports HP’s new SmartMemory, an industry first and unique technology for ProLiant Gen8 servers that unlocks certain performance and power efficiency features.  With this technology, customers benefit from a 25% higher bandwidth with up to 20% less power with no impact to performance coupled with advanced memory error detection to reduce unplanned downtime.

The BL465c Gen8 boasts upgraded storage capabilities and improved performance with the new HP Smart Array P220i Controller with 512MB flash-back write cache, the new Smart Drive hot-plug drive carrier, and the ability to mix SAS hard drives with SAS solid-state hard drives.  This new array controller delivers up to 3x performance over the previous G7 controller and the new drive carrier provides improved drive status indication to minimize data loss and improve serviceability.

In the area of networking, the previous generation server provided an integrated network adapter as a standard offering.  Our customers requested more choices, flexibility, and the ability to future-proof their investment.  We heard your feedback and now provide a choice with HP’s Flexible Networking Technology.  The new HP FlexibleLOM gives customers the choice to select their embedded network technology, speed, and OEM partner.  FlexibleLOMs make HP blade deployments change ready with the ability to update the technology as networking demands dictate.

Finally, the BL465c Gen8 provides the new HP iLO Management Engine, a suite of lifecycle management features that will help manage servers from provisioning, to monitoring, to diagnostics, and support:

For provisioning, the new HP Intelligent Provisioning enables 3x faster server deployments over previous generations by placing HP system software, drivers, and tools where you can use them immediately: on the system board.

For monitoring, agentless management with base hardware health monitoring and alerting functions now run on the iLO hardware, independent of the operating system and processor, and operating system agents are no longer required.

For diagnostics, the new Active Health System delivers always-on, continuous diagnostics, recording every configuration change and alert, in order to facilitate faster root-cause analysis and problem resolution. I should note there is no degradation in system performance as the diagnostics processing and memory is handled solely by the iLO Management Engine.

For support, the iLO Management Engine offers faster access to HP Insight Remote Support so your customer can spend less time on solving problems and more time focusing on their business.

To recap a few key points of the BL465c Gen8, you can expect:

  • Performance, Scalability, and Efficiency with AMD Opteron 6200 series processors
  • Increased bandwidth and power efficiency with HP SmartMemory
  • Improved performance with the new Smart Array P220i Controller
  • Change ready flexible networking choices with HP FlexibleLOMs
  • The new iLO Management Engine embedded management functions

These new features and AMD  price/performance make the BL465c Gen8 the ideal server for your customer.
