DreamWorks Animation uses HP technology to bring time-traveling dog to life in Mr. Peabody & Sherman

DreamWorks Animation has done it again.

DW picture.jpgThe studio’s 28th animated movie and 11th in stereoscopic 3D, Mr. Peabody & Sherman may be the best animated feature film created by this legendary company yet. And yet again, the partnership with HP technologies and the innovative techniques by DreamWorks Animation is changing the future of animated movie making.

HP has been an essential partner to DreamWorks Animation for years. HP partnered on the latest film by providing a comprehensive suite of technology solutions that ranged from high performance desktop workstations, printing, and HP Converged Infrastructure, spanning servers, networking, storage, and cloud. It’s a partnership that results in laughter and pure entertainment for millions across the globe.

The Mr. Peabody & Sherman movie is based on the characters from the Peabody’s Improbable History segments of the 1960’s cartoon TV series The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. It’s the story about taking a dog and his boy back in time to save the future. ‘Mr. Peabody and Sherman’ travel as far back in time as 1332 B.C. at the time of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun.  STOP! WAIT!  Let’s not spoil the ending. Instead, watch the official trailer below:

For those film fanatics and technology gurus, you might be interested in knowing that the film required:

  • More than 800 million data files resulting in 200 Terabytes of storage.
  • 118,000 individual computer-generated frames and 250 billion pixels to create the 82-minute film.
  • 70 million render hours with the servers processing an average of 500,000 render jobs per day.
  • 15 percent of the animation to be rendered using the cloud.

So what HP technology helped make this all possible?

It’s a long list, but DreamWorks Animation consulted with HP to build a converged infrastructure that provides continuous availability and performance for the studio’s follow-the-sun production process. With locations in the U.S. and India, the studio relies on HP Z800 and Z820 high-performance workstations in conjunction with HP DreamColor professional monitors that support 1 billion active colors, as well as HP ProLiant servers and scalable Converged Storage featuring HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage. DreamWorks Animation also relies exclusively on HP Networking to provide secure, 24/7 availability allowing creative teams to work from any location, on any movie, at any time.

“DreamWorks Animation’s long-term relationship with HP has allowed us to
spearhead the future of animated movie-making,” said Kate Swanborg, Head
of Technology Communications and Strategic Alliances. “HP’s Converged
Infrastructure technologies enabled our artists and engineers to deliver a film
with spectacular, cutting-edge visuals for audiences to enjoy.”

So as you can see, it takes a village of artists and modern technologies to bring life to a single feature animated film. See you at the next showing of Mr. Peabody & Sherman.

Great story on diving deeper into how DreamWorks Animation leverages HP Storage in their environment.  I've seen Kate Swanborg from DreamWorks Animation talk about the production of an animated feature and the technology and storage requirements is mind-boggling.  Here's a link to the story on StorageReview:
