Always wanted to tear up the rule book for data analytics? HP AppSystem for SAP HANA lets you do it.

By HP Performance Pundit

The data landscape has changed forever and so, inevitably, has the measurement of database analytic performance.   Today’s solutions need to meet new requirements including consistent data loading from multiple data sources, management of complex ad hoc queries and delivery of analysis in real time to a broad spectrum of users.

Solutions which can deliver against these requirements deliver great advantages to organizations.  For example, customers running SAP HANA have been reporting performance improvements of 1,000:1, so that analysis which used to take days can now take seconds.

Let’s take T-Mobile USA as an example.  They provide around 33 million mobile customers with tailored wireless plans, depending on their smart phones or data needs.   In order to deliver these plans they conduct highly targeted customer communications about mobile phone services, but with all of the variables and the volume of customers, their previous analytics solution was too complex and slow.  With the HP AppSystem for SAP HANA, they have transformed the way they deliver, manage and measure their data, slashing the time it takes to analyze customer information and enhancing their marketing campaigns.

So how do we measure database analytic performance in this new world?

Well, HP and SAP have been innovating again and together have developed the first industry standard benchmark in this space, the SAP Business Warehouse Extended Mixed Load (BW EML) specification.  This industry standard benchmark, available to all, provides an independently certified measurement of real-time ad-hoc query generation and analysis of large databases which are continuously updating.  Customers now have a rational, technical way to understand and measure the potential for improved database analytic performance in their organizations.

The benchmark was achieved in a stringent real world environment with some key highlights as follows:

  • Starting database of 1 billion records
  • 10 separate structured and unstructured data sources
  • 1 Million updates made to the database in 1 hour
  • More than 65,000 complex ad-hoc queries performed against the constantly changing data
  • All in a single $100K AppSystem from HP

The benchmark proves that the HP AppSystem for SAP HANA can meet today’s new customer requirements for real time analysis of business data, delivering scalable analytic performance in seconds vs. hours on massive, multi-dimensional databases.
