I’ve spent a fair amount of time this last month attending/presenting at events. And yes, cloud tops the topic list (and rightly so because the value is very real – whether that be speed, agility, or cost savings). However, there is certainly an over abundance of information being tossed around. So on the plane back from Singapore; I tried to condense all that down into a single net takeaway that I thought was valuable to share:
If you’re heading toward the cloud – think ‘open’.
It reminded me of the first Volkswagen Bug ad with the tagline ‘Think Small’. Short, memorable and certainly effective (yes, I am dating myself). After all, investing in a cloud computing solution is kind of like buying a car. For example, if you were looking for versatile transportation, would it make sense to buy a car that came with a very limited set of features, couldn’t be upgraded with after-market options, could carry only certain passengers, worked well on the highway, but was sluggish in the mountains and inefficient in the city, and could be serviced only by a single company?
While I’m stretching things to make a point, this example is a bit like some of the cloud solutions that are crowding the market. While they’ve gotten a lot of fanfare, you need to look closely because some of these so-called “cloud-in-a-box” offerings are actually siloed packages that can’t scale beyond the box. They lock you into certain applications, operating systems, databases and hypervisors, along with a single cloud vendor.
What is really needed is a unified architecture that is open to any application, hypervisor, OS and can scale resources elastically from the best source—inside or outside the data center. So when you ‘Think Open’ and are thinking ‘HP’ – that’s the approach we’ve taken with HP CloudSystem – our integrated platform for cloud services. I know this is a shameless plug for HP, but it’s true. Moreover, it’s important as you travel down the cloud road.
The HP CloudSystem combines the power of HP Converged Infrastructure, HP CloudSystem Matrix and HP Cloud Service Automation to deliver the industry’s most complete, integrated system to build and manage services across public, private, and hybrid clouds. Unlike proprietary offerings, HP CloudSystem is based on open standards that enable support for multiple types of applications, hypervisors and operating systems, along with heterogeneous infrastructure to not lock you in. It’s designed to work within your existing environment, and not to sit alongside it or create ‘rip & replace’.
And while it’s a good fit with your current systems, HP CloudSystem remains open to the incorporation of outside cloud resources. With its out-of-the-box cloud-bursting capabilities, the system enables your organization to easily access resources at certified CloudAgile / bursting partners to quickly meet your short-term peek capacity needs.
Unlike those limited cloud-in-a-box offerings, HP CloudSystem is an open system that unifies the control and delivery of cloud assets, whether they’re in your data center, an HP hosted cloud, or an external source such as Amazon EC2.
In fairness, whatever driving path you take, remember this: THINK OPEN ... and be open to the opportunity that the HP CloudSystems will give your company.
I invite you to check out the fuller story: HP CloudSystem solution brief.
Thanks,
Duncan
