HP OneView Beats Cisco UCS Manager on What Matters Most to Customers

By Ken Spear, Product Marketing, HP Converged Systems

Meeting and exceeding customer expectations is essential to success. You can have a nice product or strategy, but it needs to provide the advantages that customer consider important.

IT Organizations are transitioning to converged systems to increase efficiencies, reduce the manual efforts required for daily activities and streamline operations. Analyst firm, IDC, conducted a customer survey to understand their expectations of the benefits they would realize from converged systems. The results of the survey were published in their report entitled,Converged and Integrated Datacenter Systems: Creating Operational Efficiencies” (February, 2014, IDC #246611).

Demartek IDC quote_Spear_8-5-14.pngIn the IDC survey customers were asked, “What types of new capabilities are most important for converged or integrated systems management and operations?” Their number one response by a wide margin was the “ability to detect and remediate problems”. More than half - 55% of the respondents - identified this as their top criteria.

When customers were asked which tasks will be conducted more efficiently in a converged systems environment, two activities were clearly identified as the top priorities by the respondents:

Activity 1: Provisioning, patching and configuration management

Activity 2: Monitoring, troubleshooting and remediation

HP wanted to determine how well our converged management product, HP OneView, addressed these customer expectations in comparison to the comparable product from Cisco, the Cisco UCS Manager. We asked an analyst firm, Demartek, to provide independent testing of the two products. Demartek specializes in practical, real world testing. They conducted five different types of tests.

The first two use cases Demartek tested focused on Activity 1: provisioning, patching and configuration management. These are is typical day-one tasks during installation, such as server deployment. Demartek stated in their report,

We found that for the initial deployment steps, the two products were similar in time to completion, but HP OneView took less time in both cases…

Demartek conducted three tests related to Activity 2: monitoring, trouble shooting and remediation. As the IDC survey noted, these are the capabilities that matter most to customers, because they have the greatest impact on daily operations. Time savings in this area can significantly impact the workload on an IT organization. Demartek found that HP OneView is up to 9X faster for problem resolution for servers than Cisco UCS Manager, and users can troubleshoot a network in up to 95% less time with up to 98% fewer steps.

In their report, “Demartek Evaluation of HP OneView Management Software”, July 2014, Demartek stated:

we found that for daily maintenance tasks performed frequently over the useful life of the hardware, HP OneView took considerably fewer numbers of steps and significantly less time than Cisco UCS Manager in equivalent blade server environments. This focus on improving the ability of support personnel to effectively and efficiently manage daily maintenance activities has significant business benefits.

We believe that functions used in daily operations over months and years of use have the most impact on administrator activities and therefore are more important than those that happen only on the first day during an installation. For these daily operations, HP OneView makes many of the management tasks easier to complete than the equivalent tasks with Cisco UCS Manager.”

The efficiencies of HP OneView can dramatically affect the time required to support HP converged infrastructure. This includes HP Proliant and BladeSystem servers, 3PAR storage and HP ConvergedSystem products. Customers want to achieve benefits now from converged systems without the need for dramatic change or added cost. Cisco can talk about their ACI architecture and vision of the future, but the bottom-line is how their products address the critical needs of customer today. HP OneView was designed to shift thefocus of infrastructure management from “devices” to ‘how people work’, so customers can deploy and manage infrastructure faster and at lower cost immediately.
