HP OneView: Innovative (and award recipient) data center management

Guest blog by Jeff Carlat, Director HP Converged Systems Product Management

FS.jpgWe knew we were creating something special when we developed HP OneView. After all, we conducted over four years of research and interviewed hundreds of data center teams to develop a consumer-inspired platform that makes managing the data center as intuitive as using a smartphone app. And we looked at the factors that were causing data center operators to spend time on manual tasks instead of innovation. So it’s great to see that the industry is taking note of it and recognizing HP OneView as a big step forward.

Award recognizes ability to innovate

We are proud to announce that HP OneView is the recipient of Frost & Sullivan’s 2013 North American New Product Innovation Award in Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) Management Platforms. Based on their independent analysis of the SDDC management platforms market, consulting firm Frost & Sullivan  determined that HP OneView offers the most comprehensive and open platform available in the market today.

Key Frost & Sullivan criteria for the award include the innovative elements of the platform, and the leverage of leading edge technologies. By incorporating the RESTful API protocol, as well as the Advance Message Queuing Protocol that’s also used by OpenStack, HP OneView helps ensure interoperability with other open source tools and paves the way for innovation.

Real-world hurdles to innovation

Many of my customers tell me that the need to achieve greater efficiencies in the data center prohibits them from being able to innovate.  Companies are spending way too much time, energy and money keeping things afloat to be able to grow their businesses, increase their service levels and explore adjunct markets they’re not currently operating in.

Unlike traditional converged infrastructure management tools, which are designed to manage discrete elements such as the server or networking, HP OneView is designed to help you, the IT administrators tasked with keeping IT running, to perform common data center tasks. HP OneView enables the data center to operate dramatically more effectively and efficiently, empowering IT managers to automate routine configuration and maintenance tasks.

You can capture best practices from the infrastructure IT admins via converged infrastructure  templates, which anyone can then deploy to automate typical data center workflows in a simple, repeatable and risk-reduced fashion. And, you can use HP OneView’s open and uniform RESTful APIs to write scripts that extend and further automate your environment.

3 ways RESTful APIs help you innovate

What does a company need to be able to innovate? One of the key ingredients is time. By automating tasks, you free up time to devise new ways to meet business challenges. Automating also gives you more time to innovate because it lowers the risk you incur when you perform repetitive data center tasks manually, significantly reducing the chance of human error.

RESTful APIs provide three ways to innovate through the HP OneView platform itself:

  • By integrating into a company’s existing workflow
  • By integrating into a company’s own management software
  • By integrating into third-party management applications

Companies can get so caught up in nurturing their existing processes that it can be hard for them to move beyond just delivering a core service for a targeted business segment. By driving efficiencies in ongoing operations, you can drastically shrink the enormous chunk of IT budget dedicated to maintenance, freeing up capital to invest in conquering new markets or bringing out new products.

HP OneView not only saves you time, it also saves you money that can be redeployed to fund innovation.
