Introducing a new Big Data analytics System in a Box

HP partners with Microsoft to deliver an everyday Big Data analytics solution

Is your organization looking to:

  • Analyze all of your data, including new data types, from sources like blogs, sensors, social media and devices?
  • Capture real-time analytics to speed informed business decisions?
  • Provide a single view of your data environment through a next generation data warehousing technology to keep pace with your growing Big Data demands?

If you answered yes, then look no further.

CS_300_for_MSAnalyticsPlatform_8+4_sized.jpgToday, HP is excited to announce HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Microsoft Analytics Platform, the newest member of the HP Sharks family, based on Microsoft's Analytics Platform System. This is a new turnkey solution developed jointly by HP and Microsoft that allows organizations to conveniently and cost-effectively implement Big Data analytics and/or a Microsoft enterprise data warehouse with confidence.

Microsoft SQL Server is the most used database in the world. This means that massive amounts of data are being generated on SQL Server, and users want to link this data with other structured, unstructured or semi-structured data to gather new insights.

Today, organizations are dealing with not only data inside their organization but often need to incorporate data from ever widening sources, making it almost impossible to quickly pull together the one view needed to make good business decisions.

HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Microsoft Analytics Platform enables a single view across all the relational data in your environment with seamless integration with your Hadoop data. It integrates in-memory performance, a massively parallel processing data warehouse (SQL Server PDW) and Hadoop into one system. To enable and accelerate data driven decisions, the seamless integration of the data in SQL Server PDW with data in Hadoop is PolyBase, a groundbreaking query technology developed by Dr. David DeWitt and his team in Microsoft's Grey Systems Labs. More importantly, the system scales easily as your data needs grow, interfacing with common data analytics programs you use every day.

Convenient to deploy and use

Because the new ConvergedSystem 300 for Microsoft Analytics Platform is an HP Shark, it provides fastest time to value. It is the industry's only system that is purpose-built, factory-integrated and optimized for the data intensive workloads required for business intelligence (BI) applications. You can now collect and analyze virtually all data, regardless of its size or type, with just one system. For example, you can conduct standard SQL Server queries to access and join Hadoop data with relational data, and you can query Hadoop data without having to pre-load data first into the warehouse.  This means faster analytics and increased accessibility to all users within your organization through some of the most widely-accessible business intelligence tools in the industry, such as Power BI for Office 365. These capabilities easily integrate into the new HP ConvergedSystem or even into the existing HP AppSystem for Microsoft SQL 2012 Parallel Data Warehouse, which can be extended to include the Hadoop capabilities for this new ConvergedSystem.

The HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Microsoft Analytics Platform is also very scalable. You can easily add nodes as your data volumes increase. However to do that, you need to be able to scale across parallel nodes. Typically the process of making sure firmware and driver versions are consistent can be time consuming and complicated in addition to the work necessary for redistributing data and rebalancing IO. That’s where the MPP design for seamless scale out and the unique HP Support Pack Utility come into play. This utility comes with every HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Microsoft Analytics Platform to further reduce complexity, optimize performance and simplify management.

HP has developed a unique set of tools to take the complexity out of data analytics and simplify data management while optimizing performance. Services delivered jointly under a unique collaborative support agreement between HP and Microsoft ensure customers avoid disruptions and unnecessary downtime; customers can expect to reduce risks, increase uptime, and increase assurances of fulfilling service level agreements.

Far more cost-effective than legacy data warehouse solutions

Finally, you have the ability to put the power of Big Data analytics into the hands of everyone as the new HP ConvergedSystem delivers high-speed analytics at the industry’s lowest cost per terabyte. The innovative engineering of the new system provides a significant price performance advantage. The architecture is built with HP ProLiant Gen8 servers that provide up to 100x improvement in query performance (1).

“As data volumes continue to increase and diversify, organizations need a modern solution that can rapidly turn data into business insights,” said Eron Kelly, general manager, Data Platform Group at Microsoft. “The HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Microsoft Analytics Platform represents another step in our journey to bring Big Data solutions to everyone.”

How does HP's ConvergedSystem 300 for Microsoft Analytics Platform compare to HP's Vertica offer?  Which scenarios are appropruate for each?

Hi Suzanne,

  • When working with customers who are deciding on a Big Data Solution, we work to tailor our solution based on the best fit for the customer scenario based on:
  •  Workload (Transactional, warehouse, analytics)
  •  Performance, High Availability or Latency requirements (as defined in SLAs)
  • Integration pain points (with other BI/Big Data software)
  • TCO and TCA
