Converged Infrastructure

My TOP HP Discover takeaways to kick-off 2014 on the right path.

HP Discover Barcelona wrapped up last week, and all I can say is WOW!

The stats are amazing! During the two and a half day event there were over 10,000 attendees,
500+ sessions, 100 journalists & analysts, 19,000+ videos viewed, 66,000+ SoMe page views by over
15,000 unique visitors. In addition, there were new game-changing innovations unveiled across the IT
ecosystem, as well as HP and Partner experts around every corner to bring these innovations to life.
It’s convergence at its best to lead the next decade of IT simplicity all aligned to the speed of today’s business.

I can only imagine that if you attended HP Discover or are looking in from the outside, you would find it difficult to process all that occurred into a nice, concise package. As a result, I wrote this blog in hopes of making synthesization quick and timely to absorb the most relevant insights and help you kick-off 2014 on the right foot. Here goes:

60,000 foot view:

Take the time to hear the overall HP strategy by watching the Meg Whitman (HP President and CEO) keynote video below. Meg talks about the need for a New Style of IT; how Cloud, Social, Mobility and Big Data are the driving trends changing everything; and, how HP is delivering new solutions aligned to the way business and IT must work together so we can build a better enterprise, together.

The fact is, the pressure on IT is vast and accelerating.  The big industry shifts are impacting how IT will be built, services will be consumed, and businesses will operate. As Meg talked about, these shifts demand what we call a “New Style of IT” ... which in reality is a new style of business, powered by IT.  This is where HP Converged Infrastructure comes in.

30,000 foot view:

The lynchpin of the next generation HP Converged Infrastructure is innovation. From native intellectual property in servers, storage, networking and management engineered for convergence by design ... to ... end-to-end security, tight alignment with facilities, and the experience and expertise of our global services team and partners ... to ... always looking ahead to deliver the most powerful integrated systems, the ability for you to capitalize on the cloud movement, and building the best foundation as you adopt software-defined datacenter solutions.

All of these matter so that your enterprise can turn on a dime, flex capacity up and down, and serve up information to the right audience—regardless of device preference.  To learn how the HP Converged Infrastructure enables a new style of data center computing, watch this short video with Helen Tang (HP Converged Infrastructure Solution Manager) and myself.

1,000 foot level:

In 2013, we saw a big change in terms of what our customers asked us for—telling us:

  • They want to get out of their legacy silos that cost too much time, money, and inflexibility.
  • They want an infrastructure that can store volumes and volumes of data, handle the velocity of
this real-time data, and the ability to manage all of it with ease and speed.
  • They want an infrastructure that can scale up and down as needed.
  • They want to remove the “human middleware” (i.e. configuring, managing, setting up ... causing errors)
—meaning they need things to happen simpler and faster.
  • They want a cloud that meets today's challenges but doesn’t lock them in for tomorrow.
  • They want an infrastructure for their mobility initiatives so that users can connect anytime, anywhere,
            and anyplace.
  • They want to increase employee effectiveness, and improve business continuity and disaster recovery.
  • They want to be able to build and align new apps to the business needs rather than vendor availability
  • They want to be an innovator, not an integrator.
  • And for the SMB, they needan IT that simpler, easier to manage, affordable, and reliable so that they
can focus on their business, and not on IT.

I bet many of these sound familiar to you. That’s why HP takes this input seriously. In fact, everything we do is about helping you achieve the business outcomes you need. Better said, we want to make you the HERO of your group, organization, or profession.

Street level view:

One of the common things you told us is that virtual machines are a fantastic way to more efficiently use a physical infrastructure, but you need a better way >> manage it as a whole, deploy it in days, align IT supply to business demand in real-time, and make it scalable to protect your investments.

We heard you and as a result we unveiled the following at HP Discover: the new HP ConvergedSystem. This system delivers the fastest, easiest, lowest cost path to virtualization.  TheHP ConvergedSystem is a new product line of integrated systems that are engineered from the ground up based on 21st-century assets and architectures. Built using HP Converged Infrastructure best-in-class servers, storage, networking, software and services, the new HP ConvergedSystem family of products deliver a total systems experience “out of the box”.

In fact, I was leading HP Discover press tours of the new HP ConvergedSystem as part of the CIO Summit, and because the Converged Infrastructure Pavilion was jamming, we were having trouble even getting near the demo. Thus, I invite you to check these out in the comfort of your home or office:

HP ConvergedSystem for Virtualization helps you easily scale computing resources to meet business needs with preconfigured, modular virtualization systems supporting 50 to 1,000 virtual machines at twice the performance, and at an entry price 25 percent lower than competitive offerings.(1)

HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Vertica speeds big data analytics, helping organizations turn data into actionable insights at 50 to 1,000 times faster performance and 70 percent lower cost per terabyte than legacy data warehouses.(2)

HP ConvergedSystem 100 for Hosted Desktops, based on the award-winning HP Moonshot, delivers a superior desktop experience compared to traditional virtual desktop infrastructure. This first PC on a chip for the data center delivers six times faster graphics performance and 44 percent lower total cost of ownership.(3)

Another hot area was cloud—as hybrid solutions continue to help bridge traditional IT with private, public and managed clouds. HP introduced the next-generation HP CloudSystem – HP’s flagship offering for building and managing private clouds – that includes a new consumer-inspired user interface, simplified management tools and an improved deployment process that enable you to set up and deploy a complete private cloud environment in just hours, compared to weeks for other private cloud solutions.

Plus, the HP CloudSystem can burst to multiple public cloud platforms and it incorporates the new HP Hybrid Cloud Management Platform, a comprehensive management solution that enables enterprises and service providers to deliver secure cloud services across public or private clouds ... as well as traditional IT.

These new systems are simply amazing. And if you are still hunger for more ...

Have a Happy Holiday and prosperous new year.

Duncan
