Open + Simple = The HP and VMware Strategy for the Software-Defined Data Center

Guest blogger: Ken Spearsenior marketing manager for HP Enterprise Group

HP and VMware announced this week at VMworld that we are taking our partnership to a new level to make the Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) more open while keeping it simple. Open + Simple is very important in an emerging SDDC framework, because it makes it easier for customers to realize the benefits of this innovative technology today, while reducing the risks and costs longer term.

Open + Simple Strategy for SDDC

The software-defined data center is a much needed approach to help deliver on the values that HP calls “the new style of IT”. But when you introduce “New” things in to the datacenter it comes with a caution – it has to work seamlessly and it has be implemented with the least amount of risk. HP and VMware position is that when a type of architecture is introduced, it is important to keep it open and simple. This enables an easier adoption and keeps users much more productive within an existing technology. It also avoids the negative aspects of vendor lock-in.

While at VMworld this week I had the opportunity to interview Paul Miller, the vice president of product marketing,  HP Converged Systems, and Brent Sullivan, a VMware director responsible for the HP strategic alliance. They’ve both played an essential role in developing the strategy between the two companies.  In this video Paul and Brent discuss the benefits of this Open + Simple strategy for customers to consider.

Plus and Minuses of Different Strategies

Apple is an example of a company that introduces great innovation combined with great simplicity. However, Apple isn’t known for keeping their technology open or for working well with partners. Their approach leads to higher costs that can create other difficulties over time – it can be a great solution but it comes at a price. One of our competitors, Cisco, is advocating a similar approach that includes innovation and greater simplicity with their Application Centric Infrastructure  (ACI) architecture. There’s an interesting blog* by analyst firm, Gartner Group, that provides an unbiased assessment of this strategy. Cisco is offering a new approach with ACI, but this architecture is not really open so it lacks strategic long term advantages.

Open + Innovation is good, but it is generally not simple. Open source offers low upfront costs, but support and integration can be very costly and open source can also be difficult to maintain. There are many examples of how the initial advantages of open source were undermined by complexity over time.

Extending the Open + Simple Strategy

Open + Simple approach to the emerging set of technologies and ecosystem around the SDDC is a better option. The open + simple strategy is the direction HP is implementing in the cloud with HP Helion OpenStack, and now HP and VMware are now extending this strategy to the broader SDDC. In the past week, HP and VMware have made a wide range of announcements that include cloud, networking, storage, and converged infrastructure. These new improvements build on our years of co-development and joint marketing activities. All of these new enhancements provide new benefits through tighter integration of the component technologies developed by both companies. They provide greater simplicity and ease of deployment, while still maintaining open data center environments.

HP has a long history of working with partners to deliver open solutions. We are committed to working with VMware and all of our strategic partners to provide customers with better options. The recent announcements also included integrations with Hyper-V, KVM and Helion OpenStack as well as VMware vSphere, NSX, vCenter and vCenter Operations Manager. HP is providing options, so customers can transition to the SDDC and cloud in a time and manner that makes best sense for them.
