Sierra Wireless reduces costs / applies more resources to IT innovation with HP & VMware solution

I often talk about how HP Converged Infrastructure solutions help organizations flip their IT spent ratio from ‘operations’ to ‘innovation’. So with VMworld in full swing ...

portfolio with optimized solutions for VMware vCloud suite.

Case Studies-Sierra Wireless globe.jpg... I thought I’d showcase how one of our HP Converged Infrastructure customers achieved this goal by standardizing on HP and VMware technologies.

Sierra Wireless offers a comprehensive portfolio of mobile broadband products for mobile computing as well as machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. They also provide a cloud platform systems integrators can use to develop, deploy, and operate their applications. The company maintains data centers in five locations around the world with an IT team that supports every aspect of the business.

Sierra sought to provide a standard template to consolidate their global data centers and enable remote administration, high availability, and reliable performance. Their approach was to standardize hardware across their five global data center locations and provide a virtualized environment to support critical business applications.

“We had a mix and match of hardware from all the major providers in
the market: HP, Dell, Cisco, EMC, all the big players ... to ensure we
were getting the value we needed from those devices, we needed
expertise on each of those systems, so we had to rely a lot on
               outside consultants.”

Julian Arevalo, Manager of Network and Data Center Operations at Sierra Wireless.

Having so many different vendors' technologies was not efficient in today's world. Thus, the IT team decided that it needed to standardize applications and hardware to reduce costs, and increase the stability and the availability of their systems. For the physical infrastructure to support its virtual environment, Sierra deployed the latest generation HP Converged Infrastructure technologies that included the HP BladeSystem c7000 enclosures, HP ProLiant server blades, and HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 and HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric 10GbE/24-port modules. They also chose HP due to the ease of use provided by management tools such as HP Insight Control and Virtual Connect Manager. And the company chose to use VMware vSphere 5 for server consolidation, virtualization, and to host all of its internally hosted applications.

With the HP BladeSystem and VMware, Sierra can easily have hundreds of virtual machines running in one-quarter of a rack, and failover is seamless, more responsive, and more reliable – allowing them to better support their systems around the globe because it doesn’t require the physical presence of a support person. With Virtual Connect, the amount of cabling and connections required to run the environment is reduced by about 85 percent, and they can now update any server blade in the world from a remote location as needed, which helps it to maintain high availability for critical applications that run 24x7.

Ultimately, by creating a global standard, the IT team at Sierra Wireless has more time to support the business.

“In a perfect world, we would always have time to deploy new
technologies, but in reality we used to spend a lot of time putting
out fires ... with these HP solutions in place, we can really focus
on supporting the company’s business objectives.”

                                                                                                                                                           Julian Arevalo
