Simplified IT: HP ConvergedSystem 700 for Virtualization

By HP guest blogger Paul Gavin

In business, as in life, there are inflection points that occur which are unforeseen and unplanned. In these circumstances, you have to react quickly to a new set of dynamics. This is especially true today when business demands dictate implementing new infrastructure quickly that can be relied upon to meet business requirements. In an ideal world you have the time and resources to carefully design and implement a solution that will meet the new requirements. Of course, this complex and daunting endeavor comes on top of the critical work you are already doing and creates an even bigger backlog of day-to-day work.

HP’s new ConvergedSystem 700 for Virtualization shortens time to value.

The new HP ConvergedSystem 700 for Virtualization is designed to help reduce the procurement and implementation phases of these projects from months to weeks. HP has taken the concept of Converged Infrastructure a few steps further. The HP Converged System 700 for Virtualization makes it easier to deploy and manage virtualized environments for large and demanding datacenters. This pre-engineered, workload-optimized system will not only get you to deployment faster, but will help you manage lifecycle requirements by standardizing and providing modular upgrades.  HP teams have worked together with our supply chain, manufacturing, engineering and technical services teams with the goal of reducing the time from order to functional installation of these systems to 20-30 days or less for our HP ConvergedSystem portfolio. This combined effort means that the hardware is preconfigured and tested, the virtualization software is preloaded in the factory, and final installation is completed by our technical services team at your site based on the data that you provide us at time of order. We have also included our channel partners in this process to ensure you have a choice in your purchasing and delivery process. These systems will have HP management capabilities integrated with your choice of virtualization software (VMware at launch and Microsoft in CY 14).

These systems are designed and built as converged systems but they do contain different infrastructure components and you do not want or need to be the triage point for identifying issues and resolving them. HP will support your virtual infrastructure as a single system without your worrying where a particular issue resides. We call it one point of accountability – HP.

Other key aspects to consider are performance, IT efficiency and TCO. Internal and external analysis (ESG whitepaper) indicates that the HP ConvergedSystem 700 provides 3X the IT efficiency and reduces TCO by 28% when compared to competitive systems and our integrated network technology improves virtualization performance by minimizing the network paths between VMs.

The new HP ConvergedSystem 700 for Virtualization will be ideal for customers who have embraced blade server technology and who want to scale from 100’s to 1000’s of VMs. This system is designed to scale with a balance of CPU, memory and I/O capabilities that can be scaled from a base system with base of 4 blade servers up to 16 blade servers (modular upgrades can be factory integrated or can be installed onsite in less than 1 day in a single cabinet which includes all of the required servers, storage and networking.

Converged Systems for virtualization: understanding your choices

There are a multitude of vendors touting their converged infrastructure solutions, each claiming to provide efficiency gains, security and scalability. To understand how to measure these claims against reality, you need to peel back the layers of the solution itself…from the storage and network to the server and application. This session will highlight key architectural considerations to consider when evaluating converged solutions and will show how HP virtualization systems deliver on the promise of being more cost-effective and provide better performance for your business, especially for stability, long-term infrastructure requirements, planning, deployment, management and investment protection exposure.
