Converged Infrastructure

The HP review of Microsoft Management Summit 2013 (#MMS2013)

By Jeff Carlat - Director, HP Industry Standard Servers Software

What a week at Microsoft Management Summit!  From start to finish, the event went off without a hitch thanks to the great collaboration between the people that have worked tirelessly together across HP and Microsoft!

We had record interest and traffic in the Serverquarium, where HP and Microsoft showcased the HP Cloud Solution for Microsoft in action powering the Hands-On and Instructor-Led labs throughout the conference!

All of the customers and partners got the opportunity to get a guided tour and get “in the tank” and swim with the experts from HP and Microsoft - and this experience was nicely complemented by our Expo booth, sessions, customer events, and focus groups.

The Serverquarium – The Hit of MMS!

The Serverquarium experience is irreplaceable.  It’s amazing how far this HP solution has advanced since the 650 physical ProLiant servers that ran the labs back in 2009!  In 3 years time, we removed 620 servers from the #Serverquarium through consolidation and virtualization, requiring only 32 of the latest ProLiant Gen8 Blades, anchored with HP 3PAR StoreServ storage, to run the hands-on-labs and instructor-led-labs during MMS!

Not only does it deliver mission-critical infrastructure for the Hands-On-Labs and Instructor-Led-Labs that are a major priority for MMS attendees, it provides an opportunity for customers and partners to see a real private cloud in action AND demonstrates the value of the HP/Microsoft Frontline Partnership.

Below is a short recap of the final numbers…for more numbers and stats, check out Dung Hoang’s blog post:

  • Hosted nearly 16,000 individual lab sessions
  • Created over 48,000 VM’s throughout the week.
  • We had 350 individuals from 325 unique companies go through the private tour…companies like United Airlines, McDonalds, Capital One, Morgan Stanley, Finanz Informatik.  We literally had CTO’s and CIO’s discussing their desire to stand up similar infrastructure and Cloud OS in their datacenter as they exited the tour.

Brad Anderson, CVP of Server and Tools at Microsoft, uniquely highlighted the Serverquarium and HP in the opening keynote

And Jeff Woolsey, Principal Group Program manager of Windows Server Hyper-V from Microsoft also just made available a great video walk through of the HP Serverquarium where he really highlighted how far we have come in delivering the IT behind all the Hands on Labs over the last few years.

It’s a great showcase of HP’s innovation around our HP Cloud Solution for Microsoft, ProLiant Gen8, StoreServ 10000 storage (3Par), BladeSystem, Virtualconnect, HP IO acceleration cards and Insight Management.

We have pictures and blogs about the Serverquarium experience and there are several videos available of a Serverquarium tour.  We also had a few journalists blog about the Serverquarium.

Articles, videos and pictures

The HP Booth – Accelerating our customer’s journey to the cloud!

Complementing the Serverquarium was our booth demos, where attendees could take a deeper dive into our joint private cloud solutions with Microsoft and key integrations with Microsoft System Center and HP Storage, HP Insight Control and HP Devices.

The HP team promoted HP booth demos through blog posts prior to the start of the show and conducting live streaming interviews during the event.  Take minute to read or watch a video to learn more about what HP and Microsoft are doing together to help customers accelerate their journey to the cloud.

HP Breakout Sessions

During MMS, we had two breakout sessions.  Our first session focused onHP Private Cloud Management with System Centerwhere attendees learned how to simplify the management of HP infrastructure in a Microsoft Hyper-V environment leveraging HP’s innovative integration with Microsoft System Center 2012.  Doug de Werd and Amit Kumar demoed the new features that take advantage of SCVMM 2012 SP1 for managing HP Converged Infrastructure, showed  the HP integrations for SCOM that provide health monitoring and alerting for HP servers, storage, and Virtual Connect, and revealed  the new HP Departmental Cloud Reference Architecture, specifically targeted to medium-sized business or branch office environments.

In our second session, Paul Gavin, Dung Hoang Khac, Xtreme Consulting and Microsoft discussed the Serverquarium Unwrapped - The HP Cloud Solution for Microsoft that powers MMS Hands On Labs This session was extremely engaging and interactive – attendees participated in the discussion and were very curious as to how the solution was built, timeframe for implementation and management features.

In closing

If you were at MMS 2013, hopefully you got to visit the booth, attend a session or get a guided tour of the Serverquarium.  If not, be sure to check out the videos and posts and plan to definitely stop by next year!
