Converged Infrastructure

VMworld is rapidly approaching (T -18 days) – It’s not too early to plan your HP/VMware agenda

How fast time flies - its VMworld time again (San Francisco, Moscone Center, August 26 – 30). And once again HP will be there as a Diamond sponsor (that’s the highest) to help you navigate the world of cloud computing, tackle the hot topics that pose your biggest IT concerns, and introduce you to exciting new enhancements. Most importantly, it’s the strength of the HP/VMware partnership that will help you capitalize on the cloud quickly while alleviating those pesky and worrisome virtualization and cloud challenges.

We all know how far Cloud computing has come in one year. And as virtualized environments mature, we’re now seeing how adoption of private/hybrid cloud solutions is gaining huge momentum. On the upside, these solutions have proven to speed IT innovation, enhance agility and improve financial management. On the downside, there is still much angst and concern around things like integration, management, application protection, and of course, security. If these are areas of particular concern for you, adding HP on your VMworld agenda will pay huge dividends.

blog graphic-small.jpgWhether you’re a current HP Converged Infrastructure customer looking for cloud tips and tricks or in the cloud evaluation phase, adding HP sessions, demos, and other tidbits on your “must do at VMworld” list will be well worth your time. After all, it’s all about helping you deploy the right cloud solution for your business.

First of all, HP will be there again in full force – with detailed strategic and technical content available to you through accessible HP Executives, technical experts, sessions, demos, and our HP Cloud Advisors (the brains behind HP’s Cloud innovations). If you attended last year, these HP Cloud advisors spent hours in the Solutions Exchange show floor just chatting with anyone looking for real-world answers to the toughest cloud questions. It’s a rare opportunity. You can find these gurus in the HP Booth (#1503).

Next, you will be the first to experience cool new enhancements to the HP CloudSystem (of course all pre-integrated with the latest VMware technologies). You’ll see all the new HP Converged Cloud innovations that will accelerate your journey to the cloud. These include such things as how to better manage your cloud to avoid bottlenecks by having more visibility into problems, quicker diagnostics, and the ability to better manage system capacity. You’ll hear about and experience solutions that offer better protection of your business critical data. And as we all know, one of the main barriers to adopting cloud is security and privacy. HP will have strong innovations in this area that provide comprehensive protection for your VMware-based cloud environments. Everything you see, touch, and experience from HP is optimized for VMware environments so you can deliver your cloud services more quickly, safely, and securely.

To kick things off as you build out your agenda, below are
four recommended HP sessions to add to your calendar:

Free Storage! Build Scale-Out Storage Arrays from Space Trapped in Any Server

Breakout Session: (Mon, 10:30-11:30am) – ID: SPO3435

This technical breakout session has a focus on storage. But with cost savings, server capacity optimization, and big data on the top-of-mind topics list, this session is good for anyone in the IT trenches.

Abstract:
Do you have unused capacity in your servers (who doesn’t!)? In this session, you will learn how the vision of Open Storage Federation uses HP VSA to turn internal storage from any server platform into a fully featured scale-out SAN—providing powerful yet low-cost storage for a variety of use cases, from remote offices to private clouds. Hear from storage experts on the technology details and how it has been used by companies to expand their storage infrastructure for free by building software-based storage arrays. See how to create enterprise-class storage from your existing server and virtualization infrastructure—using any server running any hypervisor. During the session, you will also hear from a managed services provider company on how they are redefining their cloud infrastructure to deliver data mobility, scalability and high availability through Open Storage Federation

Bridging The Cloud with Layer 2 Data Center Interconnect

Breakout Session:  (Tues, 11-12:00pm) – ID:  SPO3436

This is also a technical breakout session and probably best suited for the network specialists in the crowd. However, with Cloud solutions spanning the full stack, anyone operating in the cloud world (or virtualization for that matter) will gain great value in better understanding how HP Virtual Application Networks virtualize the network to align the proper resource for delivering the application.

Abstract:

Legacy network infrastructures lack the simplicity, flexibility and speed that is required in today’s cloud computing environments to dynamically move business critical applications and workload across data centers. With legacy interconnect data center technologies available today, it can take up to weeks/months of re-designing and re-configuring the network that may require more than 100 manual command line entries to connect multiple data centers which can be time consuming and error prone. To address these challenges, HP is expanding its Virtual Application Networks with new innovations for the HP FlexFabric data center solutions that enables IT staff to speed up the connectivity of data centers from weeks to minutes and simplify configuration from over 100 to five configuration steps per site.

Best Practices for Hybrid Cloud: Build a Cloud you’re proud of, without making million dollar mistakes!

HP Spotlight Session:  (Wed, 9:30-10:30am) Room 103, South Hall – ID: SS1012

I would put this on your MUST ATTEND list. Not only does it hit at the heart of the event: Hybrid cloud environments with VMware, the presenters really know their stuff (Scott Wood is Vice President of Solutions Architecture and Malcolm Ferguson is a Senior Solutions Architect).

Abstract:

How do you offer IT innovation, speed and agility to your business users but still maintain control across private and public cloud deployments?  In this session, HP will share with you real-world learnings from clients and walk through demonstrations of the best practices to design, deploy, manage and secure hybrid cloud environments with VMware. HP Solution Architects will demonstrate how the HP Converged Cloud architecture and components help you enable IT brokering including the cloud subscriber and provider portal, the service delivery controller, and Cloud Maps.  During the session, you will get a preview of innovative new integrations with VMware including virtual security, Auto Flexing, Flat SANs, and Converged Infrastructure.

Supercharged SAN: Fine-tune Your VAAI Enabled vSphere SAN with This Collection of Configuration and Performance Best Practices

Breakout Session (CFP selection): (Wed, 2:30-3:30) – ID: INF-STO2564

This is an advanced technical breakout session, so if this is not for you, make sure to have one of your appropriate colleagues attend. Aboubacar Diare is a Master Technologist in virtualization and storage so any knowledge you can take away from his presentation will be well worth it.

Abstract:

After successfully deploying a high performance VMware SAN using the latest VMware Storage integration technologies such as VMware vStorage API for Array Integration (VAAI), VMware Pluggable Storage Architecture (PSA), vCenter integration and more; you can fine tune this SAN for simplified management and increased performance. Join us in this session as we explore a collection of VMware vSphere 4/5 storage best practices and considerations, all hand-picked to help you achieve specific increased ROI from your Supercharged VMware Storage SAN. Protect and grow your SAN investment! Attend this session, so you can smile in these Cloudy days!!!

In future blogs, I will go deeper into the demos and show floor events for those that want to dig into all the HP Converged Infrastructure Cloud solutions – including all the cool new stuff happening with the popular HP CloudSystem. In the meantime, below are a few key links to keep handy:

Stay tuned for future blogs that provide more details and suggestions.
