HP and the Newseum, an interactive museum devoted to issues related to the news media and society, today announced they are collaborating on a new gallery that will allow Newseum visitors to explore technology’s impact on how news is reported, distributed and accessed.
As the new
gallery will demonstrate, social media is increasingly becoming the way many people
interact with the news and, by extension, IT.
Properly analyzed, these media interactions produce an enormous amount
of data that can provide further depth of knowledge beyond the news itself.
However, creating software, hardware, and services that can automatically analyze these huge enormous data sets is an extremely challenging technical task. That’s why HP Labs, the company’s central research arm, is focused on solving the diverse set of challenges presented by news in the digital era.
For example, HP’s Social Computing Lab, led by Senior HP Fellow Dr. Bernardo Huberman has recently published research showing:
- how Twitter can be used to predict Hollywood box office results
- how online publishers can predict their audience’s reaction to advertising and subscription fees
- how influence online is not necessarily correlated with popularity.
HP believes that information is the greatest resource we have for addressing problems in society and business. With billions of bytes being created by millions of readers sharing and commenting on the news, HP’s research could lead to the next generation of media analytics that enables better decision-making and a more informed public.
