HP ePrint enabled printers first to support printing direct from iOS devices

Apple today announced that their Airprint wireless printing for iPad, iPhone, & iPod touch is coming to users in November:

- HP's existing and upcoming ePrint enabled printers will be the only printers to support direct printing from iOS devices at launch.

- ePrint evolved from CloudPrint, an innovative technology created by HP Labs, the company's central research and development group.

- AirPrint automatically finds printers on local networks and can print text, photos and graphics to them wirelessly over Wi-Fi without the need to install drivers or download software.

- iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users will find an embedded print function within apps on their device and will be able to automatically find a printer on their network and print to it without the need to install drivers or download software.

- This news marks the first time a  printing company and a mobile device company are embedding direct printing into an operating system for the most simple and seamless wireless print experience. 

- The service will be available in November as a free software update with iOS 4.2. iPad, iPhone and iPod touch customers will be able to print wirelessly from select apps – no set up or downloads required. Customers will be able to automatically find a printer on their network and print to it with one touch.

I sent your question to some experts over in our printing group and the answer is yes:

"HP iPrint Photo will be supported but is evolving into the HP ePrint mobile app.  The HP ePrint mobile app will support both ePrint functionality to HP ePrint enabled printers and local wifi printing of photos, PDFs and text files to HP Inkjet printers connected to a local wireless (WiFi) network."

We recently purchased a HP printer at Costco.  Is the "HP Officejet 6500 Wireless" e-print capable or will we have to purchase a new printer?

Airprint sounds great for when you are on a known network and have wireless access to the network.  The HP eprint app for Blackberry fits the bill for business travelers such as myself who often use Printeron.net e-mail print. currently,  and in the future HP eprint enabled laser printers at hotels that do not allow access to the network the printers sit on.   The issue I have is i use the Iphone and Ipad.  Will HP create an app for the Iphone and IPad that works like the blackberry app now  4.2  is coming out that gives the the ability to have an option to print in several applications.  I assume it would work the same by embedding the print to email option in the applications that allow it as the blackberry does now.

Hey HP.  

How about creating a simple add-on device that could be connected to any HP printer via parallel, USB, or as an intercept between the NIC.     You might want to jump on this before someone else does.    It would allow corporations to use any existing HP printer that they want and convert it into an AirPrint enabled printer.
