Why workstations matter

(This entry was posted by Jeff Wood, Vice President, Worldwide Marketing, Commercial Solutions Business Unit - Workstations and Thin Clients, HP)

In just a few short years, HP climbed to the No. 1 position in workstation shipments worldwide. How? We believe it’s all about innovation based on customer needs. And we do it well.

The explosion of digital content is placing new demands on video and graphics tools, driving innovation in workstation-powered industries to new heights of productivity. Software providers are moving millions of users from 2-D to 3-D, and small and medium design shops are addressing more projects, faster than ever before.

HP’s high level of customer intimacy means our customers help us define our products, which differentiates us from our competitors. HP has a heritage of engineering excellence, and has been delighting customers with workstations innovations for more than 30 years.

Case in point: The new HP Z1 Workstation, the world’s first all-in-one workstation with a 27-inch diagonal display that supports more than 1 billion colors. The display snaps open -- just like popping the hood of a car -- to let you swap out parts and make upgrades. No tools required. It has the simplicity of an all-in-one design, the power of a workstation, and the beauty of a 27-inch display. Great design is all about making the right choices for your customers, and HP’s success in this market shows that we know our customer.

Workstations have undergone a complete transformation, from highly technical solutions that had to be managed by an IT team, to highly accessible products like the HP Z1 Workstation that you can manage yourself. The family of HP Z Workstations is setting the standard for innovation, performance and reliability. With HP-only innovations highlighting environmental leadership, industrial design, expandability and serviceability, HP Z Workstations reduce power consumption and energy costs while delivering a better workplace experience. That’s why industry-leading companies choose HP Z Workstations.

But why should that matter to you? Because odds are HP workstations touch your life in some way almost every day.

We’re there when you go for your morning run. There’s a good chance your running shoes were designed on an HP workstation.

We’re there when you commute to work. Some aspect of most cars, buses and trucks on the road today was designed on an HP workstation.

We’re there when you stop for coffee. Most of the 16,000+ Starbucks locations in more than 50 countries were designed on an HP workstation.

We’re there with you when you get to work. HP workstations help manage research labs, mission-critical IT environments and billions of dollars of tradable securities.

We’re there when you fill your gas tank. Nearly every major oil company in the world today is an HP customer and joins HP to participate in designing new generations of exploration workstations.

We’re there when you go to the movies. HP workstations were used to produce Hollywood blockbusters like “Puss in Boots,’ The “Kung Fu Panda” series, “Avatar,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Monsters vs. Aliens,” “Bolt,” the “Shrek” series, and special effects in “Spider-Man 3” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.

From healthcare to entertainment, HP’s workstation technology touches your life in important ways. That’s why we’re committed to making a difference through innovation.

And that matters.

Seems to have everything you need for working with graphics, 'cept touchscreen to use it as a drawing table, any chance that'll be added?

HP workstations are simply a customer delight.

During design exploration, I was struggling with 4 hour run times per pass to complete 100 iterations of a design task to choose the best quality of result.  I replaced my old PC host with Z600 workstation and with hyper-threading enabled and accessing all 24 threads and about 9GB RAM, the run completed in under 18 minutes.  This greatly helped with extensive exploration of optimization settings in arriving at the best quality of result for the design task.

The best part is the workstation is quiet under the peak load - what a delight.

If only we can explioit this cool and quietness for servers..

HP workstations are simply a customer delight.

I switched to Z600 workstation from a traditional engineering host that helped contain the run times of a design task from over 4 hours down to under 18 minutes by exploiting it's 24 threads (of two CPUs w/ hyper-threading enabled to run a total of a 100 concurrent jobs) and with the use of over 9GB of RAM.  This allowed accelerated exploration of design task for best quality of results.  The workstation acheived this at ease while running cool and quiet - what a delight.

If only this cool and quietness can be exploited for our servers..
