Winning With Wellness -- HP invests in our employees

How often have you put off getting a physical exam or checking out that nagging pain because you just can’t find the time to go to the doctor’s office? What about following through on those New Year’s resolutions to exercise more and eat right? Do you feel like you’re doing everything you can to plan for your financial future and to minimize the stress in your life?

These are questions, that in today’s fast-paced world, many of us struggle to answer. The constant push / pull between work demands and life outside of work makes it challenging to address these important aspects of our well-being. HP recognizes these challenges and has taken action with the introduction of a Winning With Wellness initiative that focuses on helping employees improve their overall physical and financial health, as well as stress management.

“We take the health and well-being of our people very seriously,” says CEO Léo Apotheker. “Our reach and scale also provide a unique opportunity to drive a wellness agenda into many cultures and countries in the world and we’re committed to providing tools to help our employees and their families live healthier lives.”

February 8 marked a significant milestone in the global rollout of HP’s wellness initiative, with the opening of an on-site health center at HP’s Palo Alto headquarters. The HP Health Center is a full-service doctor’s office offering convenient care at a discount for employees. Cathie Lesjak, executive vice president and chief financial officer, Marcela Perez de Alonso, executive vice president, Human Resources, and Michael Ross, vice president of Total Rewards, welcomed employees to their new center.

This is the third on-site health center that HP has opened for employees. The others opened in Plano and Houston, Texas at the end of 2010.

HP’s commitment to wellness extends globally, and Winning With Wellness is rapidly expanding outside the U.S. The program has already launched in Canada, Mexico, Australia, India, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, and is in the process of being rolled out in France, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Brazil, Argentina, and Costa Rica this month. China, Germany and the United Kingdom will follow later in the year. This means, before the end of 2011, we expect more than 80 percent of HP employees will be able to participate in the Winning With Wellness program.

That sounds great, but what about the growing number of telecommuters? We recently had our facility in Marlborough, Ma. close (after the fitness room and locker rooms were renovated), but now the nearest HP facility is 75+ miles away? How about going back to subsidizing membership at a local gym so we can keep health?
