China HP stays connected with social media

If you read Monday's China Daily business section, you probably noticed three bold headlines:


“Micro blogs and macro payments”
“Economist uses Weibo.com to tout local produce for a poor Hebei village”
“Group buying on the rise”

 

Swap out “Weibo” for “Twitter”, and these might be stories you’d see on any given day in Western publications like the Wall Street Journal, AllThingsD, or the Financial Times.  Still, there’s a particular significance to these stories because of the global importance of the Chinese economy, the staggering number of Internet users in China, and the unique online culture here.

 

HP underscored its commitment to China this week with a series of investments in cloud computing, R&D, and social media, including the launch of the China HP Official blog, a blog on Sina.com, and a new Sina Weibo microblog.

 

After three days of traveling through China and meeting with customers, media, and government officials, HP held a press conference in Beijing with our senior leadership team, where CEO Léo Apotheker announced this new program to the media and made clear HP's intentions to drive more effective two-way communication with the Chinese market.

 

After months of hard work from a team spread across three continents, we’re happy to be live to the public, engaging with commenters, and sharing stories about China HP and the great people who work there.

 

We’re thrilled to use these new channels to communicate -- in Chinese, of course -- more directly to more people, but it’s the opportunity to engage on a personal level that is most exciting.  This holds true for us all across the world, but there is something unique about the energy of Chinese Internet users that makes it special.


Most people in the U.S. have already experienced two “waves” of innovation in Internet technologies: the initial thrill of dial up connections, web browsing, and email during the 1990’s, and then the transition to the so-called “social web” over the last 8-10 years.  As of June 2010, the overwhelming majority of Americans are Internet users (about 77%, or 239 million people out of a total population of 310 million).

In contrast, Internet penetration in China is relatively low (31.8% of the total population is online as of June 2010, an increase of 2.9% from 2009 [PDF]) but in absolute numbers, that’s 420 million people – over 100 million more than the entire population of the United States.  There’s also a seemingly insatiable appetite for social networking and self-publishing; Weibo alone reports over 140 million users as of May.

 

Combined, these two trends have driven explosive growth – not only in the diversity of content being shared online, but in opportunities for Chinese social media users to apply these technologies to build a healthier society and more prosperous economy.

 

Look no further than the above-referenced China Daily article for evidence (the story documents how a university professor used her microblog to crowdsource financing for a rural road-building project).

HP Chief Privacy Officer Testifies Before U.S. Senate Commerce Committee

HP Vice President and Chief Privacy Officer Scott Taylor joined members of Congress and regulatory and industry representatives this week to discuss global privacy issues.

 
Today, Taylor testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation in support of federal privacy legislation. 


“HP recognizes that consumer trust is a precious commodity that must be protected through good stewardship and robust privacy programs,” said Taylor. “Federal legislation can establish a uniform national standard for organizational accountability and improved consumer protection. It’s a win for consumers and the industry as a whole.”


Specifically, Taylor shared details of HP’s Privacy Advisor tool, an internal program to better educate and guide employees about privacy requirements, risks and considerations.

Yesterday, Taylor participated in a public forum with the Federal Communications Commission’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau in consultation with Federal Trade Commission staff. Taylor’s panel, Company-Based Approaches to Protect Privacy, focused on industry best practices to protect consumer privacy and included representatives from industry, think tanks and academia.

HP Expands Catalyst to 56 Members

In April, the HP Catalyst Initiative issued a call for submission for 20 new organizations to join our network to explore new approaches to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. The chosen education institutions would receive more than $150,000 (USD) in technology, cash, and professional services.

 

We received an overwhelming number of thought-provoking proposals, and today at the ISTE conference, the premier conference for educators and education leaders engaged in advancing learning and teaching through innovative and effective uses of technology in PK-12 and teacher education, we are announcing a sixth consortium and 21 additional organizations from 12 countries that are joining the network of leading institutions transforming STEM teaching and learning worldwide. The HP Catalyst  research themes are  The Multi-Versity, Pedagogy 3.0, Global Collaboratory, The New Learner, Measuring Learning, and the new STEM-preneur.

 

The STEM-preneur consortium will explore novel ways to combine STEM education with the skills and passion of entrepreneurship. A team of distinguished faculty from Tsinghua University, School of Economics and Management (SEM) Department of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, will be leading the HP Catalyst STEM-preneur consortium.

 

In addition, students from University of the People, the world’s first tuition-free, online academic institution, will work with the Catalyst network, through internships within the consortia on various projects across a number of education technology areas.

 

Together, the HP Catalyst consortia are focused on a range of issues, from teacher preparation and student-driven learning models to student assessment. Each group is tasked with investigating how emerging technologies can fuel learning experiences that inspire students and promote creative thinking, open-ended problem-solving and cross-cultural collaboration.  Since its launch in 2010, HP has invested more than $10M across 15 countries through HP Catalyst initiative.

 

The consortia are expected to share the preliminary results of their research in September 2011. In the meantime, HP Catalyst insights are being made available in real-time via a new HP Catalyst “Hub” (catalyst.nmc.org) and via Twitter (#hpcatalyst).

HP Supports the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act

HP today joined members of Congress in supporting the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act of 2011, U.S. legislation that will prohibit the export of e-waste from the United States to developing nations.

 

Ashley Watson, vice president and Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer for HP, joined sponsors Rep. Gene Green (D-TX) and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) in urging passage of the legislation.

 

“As an industry leader in product lifecycle improvements, HP does not allow the export of e-waste from developed countries to developing countries. We support the work of Rep. Gene Green (D-TX) and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) to pass the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act, and we encourage other companies to join the effort and promote responsible recycling,” said Watson.  

 

“Each year, millions of tons of electronics equipment are discarded in the U.S. and shipped to developing nations for unsafe salvage and recovery,” said Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA), one of the bill’s sponsors. “By carefully regulating the export of e-waste, this bipartisan legislation takes concrete steps to address a growing environmental and health crisis while creating good-paying recycling jobs here in the U.S.”

 

Rep. Gene Green (D-TX) not only highlighted the bill’s accomplishments, he also recognized HP for its recycling practices.

 

“This bill accomplishes two things: first, it prevents hazardous material from being shipped where it will be mishandled and cause health and environmental damage; and second, it is a green jobs bill and will create work here in the U.S., processing these used products in safe ways. I applaud HP for leading on this issue and its responsible recycling,” Green said.

 

Barbara Kyle, National Coordinator of the Electronics TakeBack Coalition, also advocated for the legislation’s passage.

 

“This is the most important step our federal government can take to solve the e-waste problem – to close the door on e-waste dumping on developing countries,” she said.

 

HP has a long-standing commitment to responsibly manage end-of-life products and our ban on the export of e-waste materials has been in place since 2004.

HP LIFE creates powerful learning experiences, helping pioneering minds shape a better world

Xiao Shengzhang previously managed an animal breeding center but lost his job and was unemployed for over a year. Mr. Xiao decided to start his own herbal medicine business but realized he lacked basic knowledge in marketing and financial management. He also never thought of marketing his products through the internet.

 

HP Life.jpgAfter participating in the HELP* training offered at the China Association for Employment Promotion, (CAEP), Yingshan Training Center in Hubei, China, he began processing data electronically to manage his finances, browsed market information through the internet and created a new website for his company.

 

Within two years, total production value increased 30%. The increased demand allowed Mr. Xiao to enlarge the herbal plantation. His business now provides employment for 2120 families in 20 villages.

 

Earlier this week, HP LIFE (Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs) announced that the program was adding 40 new training centers worldwide. More information on this initiative, including the countries in which the centers are located, may be found here.

HP LIFE Adds 40 New Global Training Centers

Today, in collaboration with an announcement about expanded SMB support, HP and its partners are also announcing the HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs, (HP LIFE) 2011 grant recipients. These new recipients, 40 training centers worldwide, will become part of the existing 300 HP LIFE centers network in 47 countries, helping equip entrepreneurs with the IT and business skills they need to turn their visions into reality.

 

Organizations from 12 countries will each receive a grant of state-of-the art HP technology, financial contribution and professional support valued at approximately $60,000. The grant includes a professional train-the-trainer course and access to the HP LIFE network as well as innovative online and offline training tools.

 

This year’s grants went to organizations in the following countries: Brazil, China, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and the United States. For a complete list of organizations, please visit the website for the Office of Global Social Innovation.

Vertica Accelerates Big Data Analytics with 5.0 Release

Today, Vertica, an HP Company, launched the newest version of its platform, Vertica 5.0, delivering real-time performance to customers demanding rapid and flexible business intelligence.


Customers turn to the Vertica Analytics Platform to get real-time analysis of their user and subscriber-generated data, helping them to grow their businesses. For example, Vertica works with Zynga, the developer of popular social media games like Farmville, to identify the impact of social graphing analysis on its business growth.

“With this latest release of the Vertica Analytics Platform, we’ve focused on performance, manageability, and extensibility for our customers,” said Shilpa Lawande, vice president, Engineering, Vertica. “Our new Software Development Kit (SDK) empowers users, developers, and partners to create custom analytics that can be called via a standard SQL query, taking full advantage of the performance and scalability of the Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) columnar Vertica Analytics Platform.”

HP Supports ISO Energy Management Standard

Today, at the Geneva International Conference, ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, launched the ISO 50001 standard which will create a framework for industrial plants; commercial, institutional, and governmental facilities; and entire organizations to manage energy, reduce costs and improve energy performance. It’s estimated that the standard could influence up to sixty percent of the world’s energy use.

HP Supports Electric Grid Modernization

HP applauds President Obama’s commitment to energy innovation with the announcement of several new initiatives that will advance a clean energy economy and spur innovation.

Among the initiatives, the Obama administration plans to upgrade the U.S. electric grid and provide $250 million in loans for rural towns, set new commitments with the U.S. Department of Energy to give consumers access to energy consumption data, and expand partnerships with the States and stakeholders to provide online resources and best practices.

 

HP has been at the forefront of innovations that help us better measure and manage energy usage. Utilizing information technology to provide solutions to address our global energy challenges is at the core of HP’s sustainability work. For instance, HP Energy and Sustainability Management Solutions deliver an enterprise sustainability strategy services model spanning IT, real-estate, supply chain and the work force; working with customers to transform business models and optimize their resources. Researchers in HP Labs have designed and deployed a proof of concept for a Home Energy Intelligence Service for remote monitoring and assessment of residential energy consumption patterns. The system will help identify patterns and provide insights on where energy consumption is taking place and what homeowners can do in response.

 

HP also created a Carbon Footprint Calculator to show consumers and businesses how they can reduce the environmental impact and costs of computing and printing. The web-based calculator allows users to review and compare products to help make decisions that will improve their business operations and reduce the impact on the planet.

HP Files Civil Lawsuit Against Oracle

HP today issued the following statement:

  

HP believes that Oracle’s March 22 statement to discontinue all future software development on the Itanium platform violates legally binding commitments Oracle has made to HP and the more than 140,000 shared HP-Oracle customers. Further, we believe that this is an unlawful attempt to force customers from HP Itanium platforms to Oracle’s own platforms.


As a result, on June 15, HP filed a civil lawsuit in the Superior Court of the State of California, for the County of Santa Clara, seeking Oracle to reverse its decision. HP believes that Oracle is legally obligated to continue to offer its software product suite on the Itanium platform and we will take whatever legal actions are available to us necessary to protect our customers’ best interests and the significant investments they have made.

 

HP remains committed to a long-term mission-critical server roadmap, including Intel’s Itanium processor. Similarly, Intel has repeatedly reinforced its ongoing commitment to the Itanium roadmap.

HP Announces Organizational Changes

In a press release, HP today announced organizational changes that will more closely align its corporate structure with the strategy it announced in March.

 

The organizational changes will increase transparency for these business functions relative to the company’s strategic roadmap, sharpening the executive team’s focus on customer-facing businesses, further enabling opportunities for synergies across business units, and positioning HP for the opportunities it sees in the market.

 

The company also announced that one of its most successful executives, Ann Livermore, is joining the HP board of directors, and it has appointed executive sponsors for two of its most important growth markets.

Fighting diseases with WebOS: HP and PING Team Up to save lives

Botswana is a beautiful country known for its stable government and for being one of few African countries blessed with a resource (diamonds) that did not evolve into a curse. Botswana, however, is also a country faced with some glaring health issues. In addition to continuing to struggle with malaria in the northern part of the country, Botswana has the 2nd highest HIV prevalence in the world, the 3rd highest tuberculosis (TB) prevalence, and suffers from a dramatic shortage of nurses, doctors and other health care workers. Seeing these facts first-hand and being a country with a cell phone density of over 140% is what inspired the creation of the locally founded and youth-led Positive Innovation for the Next Generation (or PING).

 

PING

PING was founded by a group of youth fresh out of undergrad, who worked for 7 months without pay in order to get the organization off the ground. This unique grass roots tech non-profit focuses on creating sustainable projects/programs that can address health and development issues over both the short and long term.


PING's innovative Botswana-based development team builds mobile applications to meet the needs of the local Ministry of Health that result in immediate solutions in areas of patient support, disease surveillance, report collection and analysis and prevention and awareness for HIV/AIDS and numerous other health issues. PING's programmatic team conducts IT mentoring programs with high school and college age local youth to focus on a more long term solution to of building local capacity to continue to monitor and update current systems and design and implement new applications to support the local government.

Besides the Ministry of Health, whose support is vital for rolling projects/services out and making them available on a national level, PING and Botswana have seen huge support from many different stakeholders. Vital support has come from Mascom - the largest telecom in the country that was the first believer in PING and has supported them with massive in-kind donations to all their projects- to USAID/PCI - whose in-country staff helped to teach a group of young college kids how to run a legitimate organization.

The health care environment in Botswana combined with the high cell phone density and all the different stakeholders coming together and committing to mobile health makes Botswana the perfect test country to try out mobile interventions first as a pilot and then to implement these interventions at the national level. The next step involves rolling out the initiatives that were proven cost and health effective in Botswana in additional countries.

 

HP and PING's partnership is attempting to do just that. The partnership began with an initial disease surveillance project that equips health care workers in the Chobe District with HP Palm Pre 2 smartphones that allow them to submit regular reports back to the Ministry and also report real time disease outbreak data, tag it with a GPS and blast out SMS alerts to all health care workers in the district. This system has taken the reporting and analyzing process, which normally ranged from 3-5 weeks and shortened it to a matter of a few entries on a smartphone and hitting send. Data is now aggregated in real time on the backend, and graphs and reports are generated in a matter of seconds.

 

PINGAlthough this project pilot initially focused on Malaria, PING and HP have made plans with MOH to expand it to 15 additional diseases, with multi-drug-resistant TB being the next disease to be added. The eventual goal with this program is for there to be a Palm Pre 2 at every clinic across Botswana with all the health workers in the country using the devices to submit reports to the Ministry, to report real-time disease outbreaks and to follow up with individual cases and screen neighbors utilizing the GPS functionality.
 
Although it started with one pilot project, the relationship between PING and HP is already growing rapidly, with potential expansion of the current project into additional countries and plans to cooperate on several other projects. This partnership has been able to expand so quickly due to the fact that the HP Office of Social Innovation and PING have many of the same core fundamental goals. These include finding ways for mobile health projects to make business and social sense, making sure that all solutions are proven cost effective and are able to be replicated on a large scale, and a common recognition that with social innovation one cannot just address the technological element but one must address the human capacity building element as well.

HP is not just powering PING from a technical standpoint by simply donating mobile phones, HP is in fact empowering PING by lending expertise, advice, contacts, experience and supporting PING as PING leads the design of the projects based on their experiences from working on the ground. Just as local youth in Botswana are learning IT and business skills from PING, PING staff are learning additional skills from HP and the individuals that work there, including getting insight on new technology and business management. This fact, that the additional knowledge and insight learned by PING staff from HP is then passed on to youth in Botswana that PING works with, is the most powerful and sustainable gift that HP could make.

HP Welcomes Mexico’s President Calderón to Global Headquarters

On June 11, HP President and CEO Léo Apotheker hosted Mexican President Felipe Calderón in Palo Alto to discuss new developments in technology.
 
President Calderón toured HP Labs with Prith Banerjee, senior vice president of HP and director of HP Labs. In addition to meeting with Apotheker, he visited with Todd Bradley, executive vice president of Personal Systems Group and Tony Prophet, senior vice president of supply chain operations.

“HP is pleased to welcome President Calderón to our headquarters in Palo Alto, California as we continue to cultivate our strong relationship with Mexico,” said Apotheker. “With HP facilities throughout Mexico, we hope President Calderón’s visit is another step toward continued opportunities to work together in advancing innovative technologies.”

President Calderón’s visit follows recent engagements with HP senior executives and high profile government officials. In early June, Apotheker attended a State Dinner at the White House in honor of Her Excellency Dr. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. He also recently met with The Honourable Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India. In May, Ann Livermore, executive vice president, HP Enterprise Business, hosted President Laura Chinchilla of Costa Rica at HP headquarters in Palo Alto.
