Meg Whitman really contextualized how important information and security is to the new HP strategy. Meg called these “Make it work Solutions” in which by HP is uniquely positioned to combine products and technologies in a holistic way to help customers turn challenges into opportunities to, in turn, build competitive advantages.
This is also a theme picked up by Andrzej Kawalec (CTO, HP Enterprise Security Services). In his presentation “Advantage through Security”, Andrzej focused on the importance of balancing security vs. enablement to unlock competitive advantage. This along with the HP Risk Based Approach to security resonated with the audience who were also keen to hear the HP view of the changing threat landscape, disruptive technology trends and the tough working environment faced by security professionals. A nice touch was Andrzej picking out some thought provoking stats, such as less than 1 in 3 executives thought their infrastructure was well defended against threats and 44% of all data breaches involved 3rd party mistakes. This sparked interest from even the more generalist IT execs in the audience.
Richard Archdeacon (Strategy and Technology, Enterprise Security Services) took the line of emphasizing the importance of detecting and preventing in order to effectively manage enterprise security risk in his presentation “Governance, Risk and Compliance -Are you under prepared or over investing?”. Richard also introduced two concepts to the Discover audience. The first, the concept of creating a “Community of Purpose” as a culture and mechanism to manage information security. The second, the 6 layers of information assurance (strategic direction, programme management, risk analysis, business continuity, issue resolution and detection and action) which in our changing security environment, now requires an effective and regular communication flow between the layers.
Richard ended with a well received view on the HP security workshop, HP analytics tools and offerings HP ESS have to report on how security across the enterprise impacts risk. |
