Dave Donatelli on Taming the Lion with Speed at HP Discover

Dave Donatelli at HP DiscoverWhile DreamWorks CEO Jeffery Katzenberg characterized the metaphorical IT lion yesterday in his HP Discover keynote, HP's Dave Donatelli provided substantial detail in his keynote today on how HP is reuniting servers, storage and networks to harness the power of convergence. A common theme emerged from his presentation that empowered this convergence: Speed.

Let us see how.

Donatelli outlined 3 projects that HP has executed in the last 100 days that sheds more light on the topic:

  • Project Moonshot is about redesiging the way servers are composed going from 10 servers per rack sharing nothing to thousands per rack sharing everything. Prediction: Extreme low-energy servers are expected to be 15% of the global server market. 89% less energy, 94% less space, 63% less cost and 97% less complexity.
  • Project Odyssey is about continued Integrity/HP-UX advancements while fortifying Linux and Windows with key HP. HP is now the only vendor unifying, mixing and matching UNIX and x86 with a single platform. This is HP's reaction to the concerns with enterprise scale deployments on Linux and Windows.
  • Project Voyager is about the HP Gen 8 servers. HP shipped the first industry standard server in the world, redefining data center expectations and economics. These are servers that basically take care of themselves with the following characteristics:
    • Faster - smarter startup in 3 seconds with 100% software built in
    • Proactive - analyzes over 1600 parameters to find and fix problems with 5x faster problem resolution
    • Simple - provision and update 1000s of servers with one click

HP's Converged storage strategy is about having ONE solution that addresses the modern storage architecture and the data protection architecture using common technology from midrange to high-end so you can do far more with much less. HP's solution ensures that there is no rehydration required after deduplication.

HP’s backup solution has broken the 100 TB/hour barrier and is now 3 times faster than its nearest competitor with the restore solution being 5 times faster.

HP is virtualizing networks that enable the deployment of applications in minutes versus months. HP's solution in this space has 75% lower latency than its nearest competitor. Security is one of the big bets for HP. From a security perspective, HP is leading the industry in Intrusion Protection. Factoid: HP uncovered 635 known day zero vulnerabilities in 3 years compared to nearest competitor: 1.

These are just some of the thoughts that I captured while attending Dave’s keynote at the HP Discover conference. How about you? Are you at the HP Discover conference? What did you take away? Let me know.
