General Sessions: Enterprise Services' role in HP's defining moment

HP is often quickly associated with IT hardware—from handheld PCs to industrial printers. However, not many know that together, HP and HP Enterprise Services (ES) are #1 or #2 in IT across every global geography and industry. HP ES brings the applied power of HP together to deliver the outcomes that matter for businesses and governments.

DAY ONE: Setting the stage for the New Style of IT

In the very first general session of HP Discover Barcelona CEO Meg Whitman said, “We know that IT managers are being thrust into new areas of expertise. Job descriptions are changing and HP is here to help.” ES is here to advise, transform, manage, and maintain your enterprise’s journey to the New Style of IT.

Meg further defined the challenges the IT industry faces saying, “Today things happen in weeks, maybe even days. Scale is no longer a barrier of entry. The heat is always on,” (General Session, Dec. 10, 2013 See the live tweets on @HPServices). She also added, “… we helped build the IT world of today, and we’re helping build the IT world of tomorrow.”

Enterprises today are challenged to quickly innovate, lower costs, and personalize employee and customer experiences. Much of their experience is shaped by key IT trends, including mobility, security, the Cloud and more. With so many outside factors threatening the way an enterprise runs, it can be a daunting task to strategize next steps. That’s where HP ES steps in. As Meg Whitman also said, “HP can help you manage today’s complexities in ways that no other company can.” (Meg Whitman, 2nd  General Session, Dec. 11, 2013).

DAY TWO: Delivering on building a better enterprise—together

In the second General Session, Meg invited HP Enterprise Services EVP Mike Nefkens to the stage. With a brief introduction of the drivers that shape an enterprise’s path to the New Style of IT, Mike let real-world client stories show what ES is capable of.

For example, the Republic of Kazakhstan underwent a huge process to modernize their infrastructure.  In the Kazakhstan’s plan to become one of the top 30 global economies by 2050, HP was brought in as a partner that was able to significantly reduce energy consumption of their railways by “ … building an information management and analytics solution to optimize their operations.” Through transforming existing applications and connecting to the new automated management system, Dispatchers, Railway Engineers and Managers are provided with the real-time data they need.

Next, Mike referenced Seadrill, who in December, 2012, decided to move their headquarters and data center from Norway to the UK, giving their IT team only 6 months to plan, design, and execute. The company wanted a more flexible delivery model for infrastructure to keep up with growth. Their solution included virtual private cloud and continuity services. As an M&A intensive company in a quickly changing sector, “ … a cloud-based infrastructure increases both their IT and financial flexibility, which is absolutely critical, and was just the outcome they needed,” Mike said.

Finally, Mike welcomed the CIO of Banco Sabadell, Carles Abarca to the stage to discuss the many challenges faced by the banking industry, and how working with HP ES has allowed Banco Sabadell to grow, and take a top spot in Spain, with top-rated customer service. Carles states that they are trying to stay relevant and competitive by “ … combining different technologies, visualization, mobility, and Big Data to become a digital player.” Carles then shares that HP has been a “fundamental part” of their journey by using HP’s New Style of IT for a “New Style of Banking.”
