HP Master the Cloud Recap, Smart Grid, Security: Around Enterprise Services, Feb 3

Here is a summary of the Enterprise Services blog topics for this past week:

After I returned home from trips to Montreal and Toronto to attend the HP Master the Cloud Road Show in Canada, my bosses (@work and @home) were curious – what were you doing out there? So I took a step back and compiled the sequence of events below, including my HP Enterprise Services Applications Services perspective wherever applicable.

Hewlett-Packard was recently selected to receive the following 2012 awards for our services featuring SAP HANA. These awards demonstrate SAP’s recognition of HP as one its premier partners dedicated to helping SAP customers achieve better business results. HP leads all SAP partners for HANA wins and value of HANA pipeline.

The final video I was able to do while in Toronto was with Dave Frederickson and Charlie Atkinson, both leaders within HP Canada. We talked about opportunities for organizations moving to the cloud.

It is no surprise that security is of paramount importance with respect to protected health information and electronic patient information. With that securely in mind, I’d like to offer some thoughts on best practices for IT security in the healthcare world.

HP Fellow Charlie Bess, HP Distinguished Technologist E.G. Nadhan, and VP Applications Services, HP Canada, and Mike Fischer speak about the portability of applications in a cloud computing environment and a client's journey in the migration to the cloud, live from the HP Master the Cloud road show in Toronto, Canada.

Pete Deacon and I looked at a miniature version of the HP Pod Data Center container in Montreal. In Toronto, we were able to walk through a version of the real thing.

As part of my work in energy and sustainability management, I keep touch with my colleagues in the HP Utilities group to grow my understanding of the supply side of the equation. Terry White and I have been blogging about applications that connect to the Smart Grid and how they will change things.

On Monday on my trip to Toronto, I was seated next to an IT director of a large beverage company. We didn’t realize we had a common set of interests until the plane was about to descend. She asked me to give her an elevator pitch for the important shifts in IT -- by now the landing gear was down and so I had to be quick.

Last day of the month and it’s time for me to wrap up our deep-dive into imaging and printing security.  Today I complete the series with a discussion on how to preserve integrity of print data and printed documents.

A number of folks who are at the HP Master the Cloud event in Toronto got together last night for dinner and we had a pretty wide ranging conversation discussing technology and technology adoption.

At the Enterprise Services booth, I had a chance to chat with Ann Keffer, WW Marketing Manager for HP Enterprise Cloud Services as well as Kirk Gillette who is from the HP ES Application Service Marketing team.

As I walk around the HP Master the Cloud Event in Toronto at the Direct Energy Center, I see booths from our various partners. One such booth happens to be that of Gibraltar Solutions, a Converged Infrastructure Elite partner of HP. I am naturally curious about what Trent Dilke, Vice President for Strategy and the Chief Security Officer for Gibraltar solutions has to say.

I am at the HP Master the Cloud road show in Toronto attending the Demystifying the Cloud keynote by Patrick Harr, Worldwide VP, Cloud Computing, HP. Patrick outlines various Cloud Myths prevalent in the industry today. For each one, he explains why these are not myths and how they can be addressed effectively. As Patrick outlines them, I am forming my own views on his assertions.

As I get ready to go to the conference (targeting one of the sessions on security today), I am wondering what is equivalent to being compromised on security in the environment that you manage and are responsible for? Are the following equivalent?...

So, I am all excited to the see the HP Performance Optimized Datacenter (HP POD) at the HP Master the Cloud Event in Toronto and walk into the Direct Energy Center Hall C. The first thing that I see is the POD – compact in its own spot taking up a little over 20 ft – a structure you can walk into and experience for yourself.

While I was in Montreal last week, I talked with Pete Deacon, who unlike Hal was able to open the pod (bay) door. Pete provided some insight on what others were asking about pods, why they are so flexible and what new types of value they can deliver.

HP Fellow Charlie Bess interviews Suzanne Gagliese,  VP Sales, HP Enterprise Services Canada, and Geoff Kereluik, HP Server, Storage and Networking Sales Canada, at the 2012 Master the Cloud event in Montreal, Canada.
