Reduce energy consumption from printing and imaging devices by up to 80%
I just hosted a webinar on EcoSMART solutions for Government and Enterprise segments and was pleasantly surprised by both the turnout and the depth of the questions that were asked. Despite economic woes, the attendees recognized that an organization can have eco strategies that are both socially responsible, AND, can contribute to bottom-line results.
IT leaders face a mounting imperative to save money AND reduce environmental impact. Trends we’ve observed include:
- 30% of infrastructure purchasing decision is based on environmental considerations
- #1 purchasing factor for green IT is energy efficiency
- #1 cost factor in green printing is paper
Good news is that newer technologies are dramatically raising the bar on energy efficiency for printer fleets. In 1984 the HP LaserJet II had an average annual energy consumption of $56. A comparable 2010 models energy consumption was only $1.46 per year. The EPA states that customers are losing 66% of their energy consumption on evenings and weekends by not shutting equipment down. Newer technology that automates that function can result in huge savings across an organization.
What IT leaders need are tools to assess and understand the environmental footprint, comply with government regulations, and be able to demonstrate ROI on green IT. Assessment is the critical first step. If you don’t know where you are today, how can you plan for tomorrow?
Some tools I recommend include the Green IT Action Plan for printing which is a step-by-step guide to drive sustainability and decrease costs by:
- Holistically access and manage your printing environment
- Identify and implement strategies to reduce the environmental impact of office printing
- Apply best practices and tools to engage users and manage the change.
The HP Carbon Footprint Calculator makes it possible for IT managers to model possible before and after printing fleet profiles on energy consumption, paper usage, carbon emissions and costs. This tool offers head-to-head product comparisons and includes data on over 8000 devices, and carbon rates for 389 locations.
Bottom line – you can’t manage what you don’t know. Use these tools to access your printing and imaging environment and determine what your cost savings opportunity is.
