Just like the ancient city of Jericho, the walls of the traditional office are crumbling down. Welcome to the world of the virtual office where the physical and the traditional 9-5 boundaries of the workday have disappeared for many workers. I can certainly say that over the past 20+ years of my career, where – when -- and how I do my job has completely transformed from office centric to anywhere, anytime and virtually always-on – in large part due to mobile devices and the cloud.
“Across all sizes of business, more and more businesses are realizing the benefits of having data access in their wireless handsets,” according to In-Stat industry analyst Greg Potter. “It allows their employees to work both on the road and at home, having access to email and other business applications from their smartphone, which enables them to be connected and more efficient.”
Even Government agencies are jumping on the opportunity. U.S. Federal CIO Steven VanRoekel announced the launch of a mobile road map for the federal government Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the Consumer Electronics Show. “We have a real opportunity to bring to bear mobile technology in federal government that changes the paradigm,” VanRoekel said. “The mobile strategy is a multipronged approach that is aimed at driving efficiency across the federal government, enhancing citizen-government interactions, and untethering federal employees from their desks.”
The rise of the virtual office represents a significant opportunity, and perhaps even competitive advantage for organizations. It not only can increase the productivity of employees and reduce real-estate costs (through teleworking), but it’s increasingly an effective recruiting tool as well --- especially for generation Y. According to a study by Mom Corps, nearly 40 percent of millennial employees would OK lower pay if they had more flexibility on the job.
Cloud computing and the proliferation of wireless devices and mobile apps is helping to accelerate the rapidly changing nature of the office. However, to maximize productivity, the mobile workforce requires the tools to perform ALL the tasks while on-the-go that they can do within a traditional office space, including the ability to print from their mobile device. However, in a recent survey on Enterprise Mobility done by Government Technology only 18% of agencies identified having a strategy to address employees’ mobile printing needs and 57% of respondents either didn’t know that printing from a smartphone was possible, or thought that it was impossible.
It’s not only possible, it’s actually quite easy. Does your organization have a strategy for supporting mobile devices? Does it address secure printing solutions? If not, there are two solutions you should be aware of:
To develop a mobile printing strategy, use the ‘Lead Your Organization with a Mobile Printing Strategy’ planning template to guide you in developing a strategy to meet the specific needs of your organization.
Additionally, there is a live webinar coming up on February 15, 2012 hosted by Government Technology to share their research findings on enterprise mobility and mobile printing solutions. You can register for the live event or view the re-play any time at the same link here.
To ensure that your organization always has access and visibility to the latest innovations in printing and imaging solutions consider HP Managed Print Services (MPS).
