What do you mean big data, little data is hard enough?

IM&A.jpgLately there is a lot of talk about “big data.” So I decided to attend a session at HP Discover called “Harnessing Big Data” to learn what this is all about.

I quickly learned that there are four main dimensions of big data:

  • Volume
  • Velocity
  • Variety
  • Complexity

This makes sense to me since I work with social media. The volume of unstructured data coming at us is ever-increasing as is the velocity. And the variety of sources for this information expands daily.

So, how can an enterprise make sense of all this? The answer, I learned, is business alignment.  This means being able to sort through all of this complex data to pull out what is relevant to the business priorities, then analyze the data to determine the key information for your business and what actions should be taken as a result.

HP has invested in Information Management & Analytics solutions to help companies do this:

  1. Automony provides a solution for unstructured data, which is now about 85% of the data available. Examples of unstructured data that I see in my day-to-day job are emails, tweets, Facebook posts and blogs.
  2. Vertica provides a solution for structured data. This is data such as transactional data, which typically resides in a database and is included in traditional business reporting.

By bringing these two data sources together, we can help you manage risk, develop new capabilities and achieve efficiencies in your business. Learn more about how HP Information Management & Analytics can help you extract real value from big data.
