Managed Print Services helps General Mills redirect resources to growth and innovation

Yesterday, at HP’s annual global Imaging and Printing Conference several new product innovations, new partnerships, apps and solutions were announced.  One interesting data point is that customer adoption of its cloud-enabled, web-connected print technologies has reached the mainstream, with more than 10 million printers sold to date.  However, one of the storylines that really got my attention was a case study about how General Mills has reduced imaging and printing costs 50% with HP Managed Print Services, saving $1.1 million annually.  There’s a lot that can be learned and leveraged from the General Mills strategy.

79% of IT professionals are currently unable to identify total printing costs

I just received survey results from Government Technology of their subscriber base of Public CIO’s and IT professionals on print management.  Notable among the responses was that 79% of survey participants said they are currently unable to identify their total printing costs.  While these results were specific to a select audience, I believe that the same could be said across most industries.  Understanding costs is a critical first step to managing them.  In this video, Bruce Dahlgren, Sr. Vice President of HP’s Managed Enterprise Solutions discusses the benefits of Managed Print Services (MPS) in helping IT enterprises bring order out of chaos while reducing costs in the process.

GAO reports leading IT practices include Improve Print Management

The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) July, 2011 report on Green Information Technology identified and recommends 8 leading Green IT practices currently used by both government entities and private sector organizations.  The findings are relevant not just to government agencies --- but to the private sector as well.  The GAO recommendations are based on a thorough, year-long audit and research from myriad sources and provide compelling strategies for organizations to both reduce costs and improve Green IT practices.

3M saves $3M through Managed Print Services

Several years ago 3M had an objective to optimize their printing infrastructure and reduce total cost and environmental footprint.  Their successes in the first two years add up to over $3 million in overall savings and include:

  • Reduced energy consumption by an estimated 79.9%, saving $1,256,605 in energy costs alone
  • Per page costs reduced by up to 90%
  • 8,240 metric tons reduction of CO2 emission from energy and paper reductions, equivalent to taking 978 cars off the road for one year.
