PSP Firmware DVD version 10 vs. SPP 2012.02
We had seen some questions from the field and customers regarding HPSUM 5.0 and the new Service Pack for ProLiant for firmware updates. The questions revolved around: "I see you are still making new PSP Firmware DVD packages available. Which one should I use?"
To help clarify matters both Marilyn and Kim weighed in on the subject:
Marilyn: We had to allow for a grace period for the transition between PSPs/FW DVD and the new SPP since most customers could not do it quickly. The grace period lasted about 9 months (started last September with release of SPP 2011.09.0 and ends after release of SPP 2012.06.0 where customers should move to SPP since the older products will no longer be updated). For this 9 months, there had to be this parallel development path to keep our customers happy.
And from Kim:
Hoping to put this to rest, the download pages for the PSPs version 9.00 and Smart Update FW DVD version 10.00 will be updated in the near future to include the following text:
Windows PSP 9.00:
The HP Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) will be replacing the Windows ProLiant Support Pack (PSP) later this year. During this transition period, both products are released concurrently. The SPP 2012.02.0 contains the same content and functionality as the following products:
- ProLiant Support Pack for Windows version 9.00
- ProLiant Support Pack for Linux version 9.00
- Smart Update Firmware DVD version 10.00
For more information on the SPP, go to http://www.hp.com/go/spp.
The final version of this PSP will be 9.10.
Linux PSP 9.00:
The HP Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) will be replacing the Linux ProLiant Support Pack (PSP) later this year. During this transition period, both products are released concurrently. The SPP 2012.02.0 contains the same content and functionality as the following products:
- ProLiant Support Pack for Linux version 9.00
- ProLiant Support Pack for Windows version 9.00
- Smart Update Firmware DVD version 10.00
For more information on the SPP, go to http://www.hp.com/go/spp.
The final version of this PSP will be 9.10.
FW DVD 10.00:
The HP Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) will be replacing the Smart Update Firmware DVD later this year. During this transition period, both products are released concurrently. The SPP 2012.02.0 contains the same content and functionality as the following products:
- Smart Update Firmware DVD version 10.00
- ProLiant Support Pack for Windows version 9.00
- ProLiant Support Pack for Linux version 9.00
For more information on the SPP, go to http://www.hp.com/go/spp.
The final version of this PSP will be 10.10.
I hope this helps and as always if you have comments or questions feel free to ask.

What options does HP offer customers whose security policies prohibit them from downloading the SPP (i.e. do we offer a secure FTP site, DVD's, or etc)?

Will future SPP ISOs support proper PXE booting and automatic update? Because they don't now.
I'm playing around with SPP2012060B.2012_0525.1, and the initrd.img file does not have the drivers to a whole bunch of standard HP network interfaces: igb, tg3 be2net. So we have PXE boot of the kernel (found in /system of the ISO) and the fetching of the initrd.img file (ditto), but it can't mount the ISO because the NIC isn't detected.
This is for a medium-sized Debian HPC cluster, so going to each blade with a (virtuallly) mounted DVD drive is a non-starter.
Online flashing is fine if you're running Red Hat, but if you're using CentOS or Scientific Linux (or Debian, like us), then offline updating is the only option. You guys really need to get PXE working properly on all of your own hardware.
