Recommendation on DVD/iso burner software

by Kleinch on 10-14-2011 07:49 PM

It all kind of started with a simple question from Terri in our field pre-sales team to se what others in the field were using to create DVDs to burn updated software and firmware as part of a general update.

So Terri asked:

We all have iso files where sometimes a customer might need to actually burn the iso image to a CD or DVD and boot from it. In supporting field techs they often use something different then the PC COE Roxio Creator Business DVD software installed on my system.

Can anyone recommend a popular/good one?

I tried Ultraiso premium but the P4000 iQ software iso (for example) would create a bootable DVD and install no problem with Roxio but not with Ultraiso - it extracted files from the iso image but it didn't make it bootable. Note the problem was NOT that the iso file was simply copied to the DVD (I've made that mistake in the past…)

From both programs the option is basically the same - creating a DVD from an iso image.

I'm going to try the SmartUpdate fw 9.30 next. But I really need a free iso burner so if needed the field tech can simply download the same program.

Any input appreciated.

And Terri got lots of input:

From Dave:

I have Roxio v10 on my Win 7 image. It does not allow you to edit the iso, like UltraISO.

It works fine for creating images and burning some images.

From Hoa:

Click on PCOE Intelligent Desktop Assistant icon on Task bar,  select Application Self-Service Manager to install most applications that you may need.   Roxio Creator Business is available here. Also using HP USB Key Utility version 1.60 you can turn iso files into Bootable USB directly without burning DVD or CD first, suitable for system without CD/DVD.    You can also update contents and build multiple ISO images onto a single USB limits only by USB size.   For the  HP field team, we use this tool extensively.

From Stefan:

If you’re using Windows 7, it does natively know how to burn iso files. Just double click on a ISO file and Windows will burn it for you.

From Eirik:

Recording CD\DVDs for use – IMGBURN

Editing ISOs – UltraISO

Making bootable USB-sticks – Unetbootin (after making it bootable you can drag and drop any new .scexe or .exe-files to the /hp/software folder on the fwdvd)

From Lawrence:

Just don’t use MagicISO if you are editing the Proliant Firmware Maintenance DVD.  It renders the ISO image non bootable. I use UltraISO when I’m editing the Proliant Firmware Maintenance DVD and it does not mess up the bootability of the ISO image. Unfortunately UltraISO is not free, but there is a trial version that you can use freely if the ISO images are under 300 MB.

From Dan:

ImgBurn is free, small and fast.

You can bun ISOs, create ISOs and burn CD/DVD from folder contents.

On the flip side I use WinRAR (7-Zip works too) to extract contents of ISO when needed.

As you can see there are a wide variety of software packages that the field uses to get the job done. Any other input or comments would be most welcome.

I exclusively use UltraISO to edit HP firmware ISOs, and use Imgburn to burn them to physical media. Works 100% of the time.

I recommend CDBurnerXP (http://cdburnerxp.se). It is free, available in 32bit and 64bit, and even in portable versions.

Very good post, I was really searching for this topic, as I wanted this topic to understand completely and it is also very rare in internet, that is why it was very difficult to understand. iso 9000
