TTX Reduces Data Center Space and Lowers Costs with HP ProLiant Server Blades

Founded in 1955, TTX is privately-owned by North America's leading railroads and was created to provide a pool of railcars that do not require the railroads to spend scarce capital to sustain extra fleets of railcars. Several years ago, TTX began to convert its server infrastructure to a virtualized environment running on HP ProLiant server blades. Most recently, the company deployed HP ProLiant BL460c Gen8 server blades to support its virtual environment running VMware ESXi 5. The BL460c Gen8 server blades are housed in HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosures and connected to the network using HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 Ethernet Modules. In addition, TTX has deployed two HP P2000 Modular Smart Arrays to support its Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 deployment. By deploying the BL460c Gen8 server blades, TTX has experienced more than a 20 percent increase in performance, which enables the business to process billing faster and improves the performance of its Microsoft SQL Server databases so that it can resolve rail car issues faster.

Everything rides the IT train

At TTX, IT plays a vital role. As Jerry Gott, director of IT Business Solutions, explains, “TTX is a logistics company at heart. We maintain massive databases of our fleet of railcars and our infrastructure is used to maintain that fleet. We handle operations, billing, repairs, and the pooling of our cars. We also maintain the electronic data warehouses and develop custom applications. Almost every part of our business runs through IT resources.”

Converged Infrastructure reduces data center costs

TTX deployed the HP BL460c Gen8 server blades as a part of its HP Converged Infrastructure. “When we moved from discrete physical servers to a virtualized environment running on HP Converged Infrastructure technologies, we saw about a $3,500 monthly cost savings for our electrical and cooling bills,” says Gott. “The bills changed so drastically, even our local electric company wondered what we were doing.”

He continues, “We also reduced the floor plan in both of our data centers by two-thirds, and at the same time we increased server density by deploying virtual servers on HP server blades and greatly reduced the amount of cabling by using HP Virtual Connect.”

Success powered by relationships

TTX credits much of its success with its HP Converged Infrastructure to its relationship with HP. Gott explains, “HP is always around. They stop by, they call, the deliver lunch-and-learn programs. Our HP representatives have been good to us and if we need something, they are there. My staff is very smart, but whenever we need something, we know we can always contact HP.”
