Think you have data challenges? Consider this HP customer.

Like many organizations, the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) of Illinois is wrestling with unrelenting data growth. But its problems are a magnitude different from those of many businesses. It currently manages about 100 terabytes of data, and its data is doubling every two years.

This huge and growing mountain of data comes with the territory. UHC is an alliance of 107 academic medical centers and 246 of their affiliated hospitals. It collects data from its members and then presents analysis generated by its developers, to allow members to analyze the data for themselves. The resulting information helps UHC members operate more efficiently and economically.

A while back, UHC went looking for a low-cost, scalable solution to efficiently manage its mountain of data. At the same time, the consortium was also looking to reduce costs by consolidating two data centers into one.

It found an ideal solution in a virtualized HP BladeSystem environment. The solution enabled UHC to reduce physical servers by virtualizing with VMware vSphere 4 and HP ProLiant BL490c G6 server blades housed in HP BladeSystem c7000 enclosures. Network connection was made via HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Modules.

The IT and business results were extremely impressive. They ranged from performance gains and increased management efficiency to dramatic savings stemming from a smaller IT footprint and reduced power consumption.

“The HP BladeSystem c7000 enclosures with the HP ProLiant BL490c G6 server blades are just amazing,” says Steven Carlsberg, Network Manager. “I can’t imagine a better way of doing virtualization than on HP gear.”
