Want to reduce converged infrastructure configuration times? Here’s how.

Guest blog by Bryan Jacquot, Chief Technologist, HP Converged Systems

One thing I realized during the development research that we put into designing HP OneView is how critical speed is becoming in today’s data center. We found a growing IT management gap between business needs and IT’s capability to respond. When it takes 66 days to deploy new infrastructure (as it did for one client of ours), you know you have a problem.

It’s estimated that by 2017 three-quarters of infrastructure and IT operations organizations will have turned to third-party tools and/or custom solutions to fill the gaps in their management platforms. HP OneView software-defined converged infrastructure management platform enables you to fill those gaps with just one solution that can dramatically increase your productivity and reduce your costs.

Leveraging the home-field advantage

HP OneView is optimized to deploy and manage HP BladeSystem and HP ProLiant Gen8 servers efficiently, saving you time and money and greatly reducing the chance of human error. Because it was purpose-built to work with BladeSystem and ProLiant Gen 8 servers, HP OneView is able to automate much of the work that admins would have manually done otherwise. HP OneView knows the order that steps should be done, it knows when tasks can be performed in parallel or serial, and it knows when and how often to retry an operation. These are things that many admins would have to look up or learn through trial-and-error. But with HP OneView we’ve built that knowledge into the platform; a purpose-built converged management solution.

Here are some other benefits of HP OneView’s purpose-built converged management solution offers:

  • Uniform resource model gives you a simple and consistent management paradigm
  • Built-in automation for the most common BladeSystem tasks such as configuring agentless monitoring
  • Templates and groups provide consistent configuration and change propagation every time
  • Built-in HP Smart Update Manager engine for performing automated firmware update

No need to go from zero to 60

We also know that no single management tool will do it all in an enterprise data center.  Therefore, we designed HP OneView from the ground up for integration and interoperability.  The open RESTful API lets you use your existing infrastructure tools in conjunction with HP OneView; the platform integrates smoothly into the broader IT ecosystem that you already have in place. For example, you can easily integrate with your existing processes and tools, such as your configuration management database (CMDB) or custom monitoring tools.

If you rely on an orchestration engine such as HP Operations Orchestration to automate end-to-end workflows, HP OneView’s API easily snaps in to your existing workflows enabling your end-to-end workflows across server, storage, and networking.

Reap the benefits of automation

HP OneViews software-defined approach to lifecycle management allows you to automate data center operations, enabling you to dramatically reduce the cost and the time required to deliver IT services and meet business demands.  Our client that previously spent 66 days to deploy new infrastructure was able to deploy the same infrastructure in 1 night using HP OneView.  That’s real-world savings.
