Wasserstrom gets relief from the headaches of poor performance with HP Converged Infrastructure

Wasserstrom offers products and services to over 50,000 customers in the restaurant, hospitality, and healthcare industry. The company provides everything from tabletop items, kitchen supplies, service and storage products, catering supplies and maintenance tools to custom fabricated stainless products, seating, millwork and equipment. Wasserstrom requires a complex technology infrastructure to manage all the customer orders with millions of transaction per day. The company had developed an in-house enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution, but several years ago the company decided to move to SAP. As a longtime IBM customer, Wasserstrom leased servers and storage to run the SAP solution, including an IBM AS/400 server and an IBM DS4800 SAN.

Wasserstrom just never got the performance it expected from the solution.

“Our storage system couldn’t keep up with the demands on the database, and it caused poor performance across the board,” says Carl Miller, Operations Manager, Wasserstrom.

The limitations of the current hardware prompted Miller to look for a new storage solution. When he learned about the capabilities of HP 3PAR Storage, he knew he wanted 3PAR to be a part of the next data center upgrade. Another goal was a completely redundant solution to avoid any future downtime. Finally, Miller wanted to reduce the data center footprint and implement virtualization. To meet all of these challenges and be better positioned for the future, Wasserstrom found everything they needed with HP Converged Infrastructure solutions.

“When I sat down with HP and told them what I wanted to do, they understood exactly what I needed,” says Miller. “They were great to work with.”

Wasserstrom improved performance across the board.

“Installing HP 3PAR Storage alleviated all of our performance issues with SAP, email, and the e-commerce site, where we saw a 40 percent performance increase,” says Miller.

Its database response times dropped from 22 milliseconds (ms) to less than 2 ms.

“We have a very high volume transaction system. With millions of transactions per day, 22 milliseconds per transaction adds up quickly,” says Josh Grabill, Lead Network Engineer, Wasserstrom. “Performance is not a problem anymore.”

Wasserstrom purchased two HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosures with six HP ProLiant BL460c Server Blades in each enclosure. The blades are connected by the HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric 10 Gb/24-port Ethernet Modules to ensure throughput and performance. For server virtualization, Wasserstrom installed VMware vSphere 5. Although the IT team had no previous experience with HP equipment, they found the system easy to install.

“I couldn’t ask for a smoother transition than implementing the VMware software and the HP hardware,” says Miller. “We had it up and running within two weeks and started moving everything over.”

The increased performance Wasserstrom has experienced has helped improve productivity across the company, because employees can access applications and complete tasks faster.

“We set up an email account where people could report slow system performance. Every day I would get at least 20 complaints,” says Miller. “Ever since we implemented the HP hardware, I haven’t received a single email.”

Here is what Wasserstrom realized in IT improvements.

  • Increased e-commerce system performance by 40%
  • Dropped database response time from 22 ms to less than 2 ms
  • Reduced power consumption by 33%, saving $2,000 per month
  • Shrunk data center footprint from 13 racks to 5 racks

And all these improvements in the data center created outstanding business benefits

  • Eliminated delays with entering orders in SAP system
  • Implemented redundancy to avoid future downtime
  • Improved user productivity by addressing slow system performance

The whole enchilada

By upgrading its data center using HP Converged Infrastructure, Wasserstrom experienced an immediate impact on its operations. “I have full redundancy from tapes to storage to server blades. We have a fully redundant architecture in five racks of hardware—that’s amazing,” says Miller. “With HP Converged Infrastructure, we have a solution that can keep us from ever having downtime again.”

Enough said!
