Aligning Unstructured Data to Achieve Impressive Business Results
By Darrell James
According to a recent survey (reported by ZDNet), a majority of respondents acknowledge that unstructured information is growing out of control and is driving the big data explosion—91 percent say unstructured information already lives in their organizations, but many aren’t sure what to do about it.Working with or without a partner, many organizations have considered and even attempted data profiling activity, but few have received the anticipated benefits.
HP’s Data Profiling Service, announced Tuesday at Discover Vienna 2011, is different. We don’t require a client to have already implemented a Storage Resource Management (SRM) tool, plus we have a proven methodology that the client or HP can execute upon. The result provides improvement that not only benefits storage infrastructure but also backup/recovery and data archiving environments.
As IT budgets decline and storage needs increase, companies are diligently trying to better understand how to tame the expanding storage needs through cost takeout. Digital media, video and audio files are growing without bounds. Presentations are getting larger and as revisions are generated, so are additional space requirements. In fact, most organizations lack true exposure to the various types of files that exist in the environment, and don’t know how to organize and define those types, how much space they may be taking up, or how to make a determination about what is valid data and what is invalid data in order to take action.
The goal of the HP Data Profiling Service is to empower users with a simple methodology to categorize their data types. Data characteristics such as file aging, duplicate files, stale and orphan files and other opportunities for efficiency gains will be explored.
