Enterprise software, services, and new devices: Day 2 wrap up of HP Discover 2013 in Barcelona

There was just as much to do on day 2 of HP Discover 2013 in Barcelona. Here are some highlights from the day.

General session featuring enterprise services, software, and new devices

The first presentation in today’s general session was led by Mike Nefkens, executive VP, HP Enterprise Services, who outlined the progress and growth made in the services division this year and shared customer examples of key innovations.

Nefkins broke down today’s upcoming priorities for enterprise into five key drivers:

  • Your customer experience—how customers are able to interact with organizations is becoming a primary metric of business success
  • Citizen engagement—governments must catch up with business in terms of providing more access points for citizens to engage with government
  • Employee empowerment—employees are also customers and citizens, too; they expect, and should be provided with, the right tools to keep them productive
  • IT-enabled transformation—technology is now a differentiator; organizations should be building toward the future on a foundation of IT
  • Acquisitions and divestitures—organizations must acquire the agility to restructure on the fly, integrating new businesses and services or cutting them loose

Next up was George Kadifa, executive VP, HP Software, who shared how HP is helping to enable a new style of business, based on the New Style of IT, which integrates mobility, cloud, Big Data, and security into one cohesive foundation.

Similar to Nefkins first key enterprise driver, Kadifa characterized 2013 as “the year of listening to the customer” and emphasized the need for organizations to acquire the right IT partners to enable the flexibility, scalability, and innovation to meet the current needs. To illustrate the point, Kadifa outlined some recent announcements from HP Software, including:

The third presentation of the keynote was delivered by Dion Weisler, executive VP, HP Printing and Personal Systems, who shared the latest new gadgets designed for the mobile, connected professional. Announcements included:

Highlights from the show floor

Below are some high points from Wednesday.

Innovation Theater session—The future of HP Labs: HP Discover attendees had the opportunity to hear from a panel of HP Labs researchers on Wednesday, including John Sontag, Jaap Suermondy, and Martin Sadler. Moderated by Martina Trucco, the special session focused on the IT landscape and how it will be evolving over the next few decades, and more importantly, how IT will transform our lives.

"If you look at the big problems that face society today, we do very well in the western world (but) we don't do well as a planet on some of these things,” said Martin. “There are some really big societal challenges that we face as a planet, as a world, that all of this technology has already helped us with in the western world. We can get out there and we can do it, at the kind of price points people need. How to get all the right stuff in the physical world to the right places at the right time needs a lot of IT. And for the companies out here, we can help them to make money while doing the right thing."

intel.jpgIntel booth: A visit to the Intel booth offers a glimpse into the future of Intel's offerings including touch-free computing and gesture-recognition products similar to HP Leap. The lack of wires and any leads is apparent unless you too become distracted by the immersive gaming platform which will have you high-fiving cartoon characters.

This year's HP Discover, according to Intel's Alan Gibson, account manager, has brought a lot more traffic through the Discover Zone. A hot topic this year is the data center—the Intel booth features an interactive game which tests visitors on their data center knowledge. The focus of the game is on educating the user on the benefits of refreshing technology including the lower costs, massive power savings, and increased performance of newer data center technology.

microsoft.jpgMicrosoft booth: Microsoft, a Diamond Sponsor of HP Discover, has also seen a lot of traffic coming through its booth in the Discover Zone. Microsoft has hosted some live demos in the Discover Theater and received great reviews and interest from attendees excited to learn more about Lync and Microsoft Cloud OS. Make sure to stop by Booth 502 before the end of the show to check out (and play around with) Windows 8 on an assortment of HP devices including the HP ElitePad.
