HP Discover 2012: Cloud computing that gives you choice, confidence and consistency

Several HP cloud customers took to the stage at the plenary session of the second day of HP Discover 2012 in Frankfurt, 4-6 December, to share the benefits they’re seeing from HP cloud computing solutions. Their stories brought to life the three adjectives on which HP bases its cloud products and services: choice, confidence, and consistency. The adjectives also manifest in the new cloud products and services that were announced today. (More about the announcements later in this post.)

Healthcare technology company McKesson is a customer of HP CloudMaps templates for creating cloud application services. Merritte Stidston, a distinguished technologist and director at McKesson said consistency is a key benefit, allowing McKesson’s IT team to create and deploy consistent and standardized cloud applications over and over again.

A senior IT executive from BP beamed in live from London to share how he likes the choice that HP provides his company. He said HP is helping BP be explorers—explorers of oil and gas in some very remote locations. He said he is confident with HP’s ability to partner with the BP through its transition from private clouds to hybrid clouds and eventually to public cloud deployments.

Today, HP announced new products and enhancements to existing solutions as part of an extensive push to broaden its cloud portfolio.

HP CloudSystem enhancements give you more choice and new enterprise-grade capabilities for building cloud environments. Among the enhancements are:

  • Integration of OpenStack technology and KVM virtual machines
  • Expansion of cloud bursting capabilities to CloudSystem to CloudSystem, HP public cloud, and Amazon ECS
  • Integration with HP Continuous Delivery Automation to speed app delivery, a key benefit for DevOps
  • Enterprise-grade availability and security capabilities

HP Cloud Service Automation 3.1 gives you a single self-serve admin portal for hybrid cloud management. CSA 3.1 supports OpenStack/KVM virtual environments and integrates with HP TippingPoint CloudArmour solutions. These include network intrusion prevention and detection services.

HP Continuous Delivery Automation (CDA) 1.1 takes a building-block approach for different infrastructure models across lifecycle stages. It combines with HP CloudSystem to help speed the creation and delivery of cloud applications.

HP Cloud Solutions for Communications Service Providers include a number of enhancements that help CSPs reduce costs and generate new revenue streams. The offerings include a Cloud Business Strategy Workshop, HP IaaS Domain gateway to help speed IaaS deployment, and Device Management as a Service to control data backup of mobile devices and PCs.

HP Cloud Services includes service enhancements to help you to transition production workloads to the cloud backed by service-level agreements, management, provisioning, and orchestration. The offerings include:

  • HP Cloud Compute as a pay-a-you-go model
  • HP Cloud Block Storage, which is now in public beta
  • HP Cloud Application Platform-a-a-Service for application development and deployment
  • Cloud Workload Migration Services to help users assess, plan, and migrate existing production workloads to HP public cloud

Global Product Authentication Service, featuring HP Labs innovations, is a cloud-based customer protection solution. It helps you combat the problem of counterfeit goods and activities. It can be used to protect consumers of packaged goods, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, electronics and more. Learn more in this video:
