HP Discover Exclusive: Major announcements usher in the next era of storage

As data is growing in business value, it’s also growing…and growing and growing. Integrated storage solutions that simplify, secure and analyze ever larger portions of data are not just needed to keep IT managers and administrators sane—they’re a key to maintaining a competitive edge.

Today at HP Discover 2012 in Frankfurt, David Scott, senior VP and general manager of HP Storage, announced three new products that will usher in the next era of storage:

  • HP 3PAR StoreServe 7000 – the industry’s first Tier 1 midrange storage system
  • HP StoreAll with Express Query – tame and mine unstructured data at record speed
  • HP StoreOnce Backup – Federated deduplication from SMB to service providers

In our blog post leading up to today’s storage announcement, we outlined three primary challenges associated with managing storage in today’s data-heavy world:

  • Primary storage: Legacy storage is often inefficient, hard to manage, and requires different systems as you scale.
  • Information retention & analytics: Unstructured data is growing rapidly. Today’s solutions typically can’t scale, provide efficient search capabilities, or effectively manage files and objects in a single system.
  • Information protection: Backup windows are shrinking and recovery data is even more important. Many of today’s disk-based backup systems use different deduplication algorithms and don’t work together.

The new HP Storage products announced today are designed to address each of these challenges. But the big difference is that they don’t just address these challenges individually. They address them in an integrated way that brings your storage together under a common set of characteristics. The concept underlining these capabilities is something HP is calling “polymorphic simplicity.”

Storage designed with polymorphic simplicity is fundamentally open. It scales and conforms across information, addressing storage, retention, and analytics within one platform and can be shared across solution sets.

The inclusion of analytics capabilities, provided by HP StoreAll Express Query—a solution from HP Labs—is “finally pushing intelligence and analytics down to storage level,” stated Scott. With Express Query, you can analyze up to 500 million files in 1.4 seconds, versus 42 hours for standard solutions. That’s 100,000 times faster—a pretty significant leap into the next era of storage.
