3 ways to get smart: Intelligent Management Center and converged network management

By Gladys Alegre-Kimura, Global Product Marketing Manager, HP Networking

gak_a.jpgI was reading this article on Lightreading.com that talked about why CIOs need smarter network tools. According to the article, BT will be unveiling an updated customer dashboard with new tools that provide insight into network performance.  While this is all well and good, HP Intelligent Management Center (IMC) has always provided a dashboard that delivers a unified view of the network along with embedded smart tools so that network managers can make smart decisions regarding the network.

As I wrote in my last blog, the newly released IMC 5.1 acts as the “point guard” of the network through virtual orchestration for th.... The new capabilities within IMC 5.1 do not stop there and even help you orchestrate winning shots using network management. There are a slew of features that make managing the network easier and smarter in v5.1, from compliance checking, extensible APIs, network monitoring dashboard for your smart phone and more. Here is a discussion of the top three ways to get smart with converged network management:

1. Do you have concerns regarding device configuration compliance?

A new feature in IMC, Compliance Center enables administrators to ensure that devices and their configuration comply with policies defined within IMC. You can remediate non-compliant devices and ensure consistency across the network and compliance of infrastructure. It’s another way IMC provides smart tools that lets administrators be pro-active managers of their network.

2. Need to deliver network-based services through in house customized application?

We have enabled third-party application developers to integrate their applications to IMC by opening up over 200 APIs in the IMC Enterprise version. Now, third-party developers can access network information, make device configuration changes, from their solution by interfacing with IMC. We hope you, our customers and HP Partners will be able to take advantage of the IMC Extended APIs and add value to your current solutions. This is another clever way HP is extending IMC single pane-of-glass management to enhance customer-built applications and partner offerings.

3. Need a cup of coffee but glued to the monitor?

Finally, HP is enabling administrators to monitor the network and be free from sitting in front of a monitor at all times with the release of the IMC Mobile application, akin to a dashboard on your phone. You will be able to monitor the network and acknowledge alarms from your Android-based or iPhone smartphone. Of course, complex network issues will be addressed from the Network Operations Center. However, the assurance of knowing that you can monitor issues from your smartphone while you are at lunch or grabbing a cup of coffee is liberating, isn’t it?

So if you need smarter tools to manage your network, you need to consider looking at IMC v5.1. With a consolidated view of the network, IMC, the converged management platform, provides a suite of tools above and beyond what was discussed today. IMC v5.1 will be available for customers to evaluate for 60 days, purchase, or upgrade to if IMC v5.0 is previously installed as of February 13, 2012.

For viewing iMC from an iOS/Android device, is it an application that needs to be installed on the handset, or is it just using the native web browser?

Hi Lindsay,

The IMC Mobile application will need to be installed on your smartphone and is not a mobile web browser based app. The application is available with the IMC v5.1 download.

Ah, thanks for that. I've found the notes in the installation guide for Android devices. You also mentioned iPhone devices - I can't find any notes for how to get access to the application from an iPhone. Do you know how I can do this? The only reference to iPhone I can find in the Admin and Install guides is this line " IMC supports the Android and iPhone clients."

Any ideas how to get the iPhone client working?

Thanks!
