Ethernet Switching Market Share: Cisco continues to feel the heat

By Mary Gabra, Manager, Market and Competitive Intelligence, HP Networking

mg.pngThis is the time in the quarter where I blog to update you on the Ethernet switching market and share changes among the players.

Dell’Oro Group reported 3Q2012 market share results and I’m proud to share that HP Networking continues to be the #2 vendor globally, with double digit Ethernet Switch market share.   Unfortunately, unlike HP Networking, Cisco would probably like to forget this quarter.  Why?

For two consecutive quarters, Cisco achieved the lowest market share position in 10+ years.

So, what is happening when it comes to Ethernet switching market share?

Cisco is feeling the heat from HP and other competitors like Juniper and Huawei.  Looking at the numbers, Cisco’s share in 3QCY2012 was 66.7%, down by 3.4pts Y/Y from 3QCY2011. HP Networking earned about half of that loss in market share; the remainder was split among the other players.  HP’s Ethernet switch market share was 11.5%, up by 1.4pts Y/Y.

As I mentioned in my blog last quarter, Cisco’s Ethernet Switch market share continues to decline.  HP Networking continues to gain market share Y/Y.  Moreover, HP Networking revenues exceed the sum of revenues of the next 5 competitors: Juniper, Brocade, Huawei, Dell and D-Link.

mg_3.pngHP Networking is focused on providing customers with innovative and leading networking solutions.  HP has earned marquee accounts around the world and in every region, and our customers have told us that they chose HP Networking because the FlexNetwork architecture provides simplicity and performance across the infrastructure.

It’s worth noting that Cisco disappointed analysts in 3QCY2012, which historically is a strong quarter.    I have to say that HP Networking is a real player that is  transforming the industry one customer at a time, and HP’s market share continues to grow as a result.    Networking is going thru one of the most exciting times and it will be very interesting to watch how this industry changes in the next few years.  I bet you with the momentum we have now, HP Networking is in it to win!

I will continue to monitor this market closely and keep you posted in the upcoming quarters.
