FlexCampus: One great networking story not staying in Vegas

By Erik Papir, HP Networking

Interop Booth.jpgTo many, eight days in Las Vegas may sound like a jail sentence. But I am proud to say that I survived without even making it onto truTV's Las Vegas Jailhouse! I just got back from Interop 2011 in the middle of the desert. A lot of my time was spent at our HP booth talking to customers, partners, press and analysts about our new FlexNetwork Architecture and specifically about our FlexCampus solutions.

Telling the FlexCampus story

The day before Interop officially started, HP had a large press event where we announced the new architecture and unveiled the A10500, which is our new flagship core switch for campus networks.

10500 Photo.jpgDuring the press event, we also re-introduced a few other key elements in the FlexCampus story including the E8200/E5400 switch family for the campus access layer. We just did a complete refresh of the modules for this family of switches and these switches were first-to-market delivering Energy-Efficient Ethernet, a new IEEE standard.

Speaking of first-to-market, we were also the first wireless networking vendor to ship an AP that supports dual radios and THREE spatial streams. This solution allows you to get 450Mbps per radio that is pretty darn close to wired performance out of a wireless solution.

As I spoke to customers at Interop, it was clear that the FlexCampus message was resonating. Many were just impressed and excited to see a module in an HP switch that had 40Gbps connections. Others were happy to see that we were showing off some of the research we have been doing in HP Labs, namely the optical backplane solution for our E8200 campus switches. Overall, it was an energetic and exciting time in the booth and you could see it in the faces of the visitors to our booth.

Vegas revisited – great videos and blog from Interop

We had a pretty busy week at Interop 2011 launching our FlexCampus architecture. If you weren't in Las Vegas for Interop and didn't get to see our newest A10500 switch, here is a link to an interview I did with geekazine.com.

Also, check out this geekazine.com video if you want to see a little bit more on our new 450Mbps wireless solution.

Lastly, here is a blogger's view of the optical backplane solution.

Are you starting to see more multimedia and video traffic on your campus networks?  I would love to hear your feedback!
