HP a Strong Performer in Forrester's Data Center Networking Hardware Wave Report

By John Gray, Group Manager, HPN FlexFabric product marketing

jg.jpgForrester Research, Inc. recently published their report, The Forrester Wave™: Data Center Networking Hardware, Q1 2013 that focused on data center networking hardware vendors.  The January 2013 report surveyed eight significant solutions providers including HP, across an extensive list of data center criteria to help IT professionals select the right networking partner for their data center. As you can see from the wave chart, Forrester cited HP as one of two vendors that “lead the strong performer pack.”  In the report, Forrester states that HP is one of two vendors that “separated themselves from the pack with a complete road map and vision toward delivering [virtual network infrastructure] functionality”.

Strong Capabilities

Forrester used a comprehensive methodology that evaluated vendors on 85 different criteria, customer reference calls and product demonstrations.  Forrester summarized the current offering criteria that enterprises should use in selecting their vendor with their Five S’s framework: Scalable, Shared, Simplified, Standardized, and Secure.

I am happy to report that HP was one of two vendors that dominated two or more of the S’s.  Most notably, HP received the highest score in the simplified category, which reflects how easy it is to manage the network. This directly aligns with our core value proposition of helping customers simplify the design and operations of their data centers.  The HP Intelligent Management Center (IMC) was specifically called out as leading in this evaluation in integrating networking operations into the data center.  It binds together virtual and physical operations, which we believe helps customers to automate their data centers. In the report, Forrester states that customers looking to optimize operations and automate an HP converged data center should consider HP networking. We think that is an informed and valuable recommendation for customers!

Our HP Converged Infrastructure offers more value

Having an independent and credible research firm such as Forrester give HP a strong performer rank is great.  However, I want to also clarify that our HP solutions deliver more customer value than what was featured in the report. The Forrester report only evaluated discrete networking solutions and didn’t evaluate solutions that included servers or converged infrastructure.

As such, end-to-end data center solutions like HP’s Converged Infrastructure (CI) solutions which include converged server, storage and networking were outside the scope of this report.

One example of a popular use case that wasn’t evaluated was our one-tier HP FlexFabric design. In this highly simplified, converged fabric design, our HP 12500 series core switches connects directly to an HP BladeSystem (with Virtual Connect or our Comware 61XX Blade Switch interconnect) enabling customers to build more flatter, more simplified, lower cost, ultra-low latency network that is optimized for highly virtualized (Cloud) data centers.

DreamWorks Animation for example is one customer who is leveraging this design - allowing them to focus less on managing their network and more on their core business - making great films.

Our present and future looks bright

One additional data point to consider is that the evaluation was based on products that were generally available by April 30, 2012.  So as strong as we feel HP scored in this report, we believe organizations who are currently considering HP networking solutions will garner even more value from more recent 2012/13 innovations such as HP Virtual Application Networks, Ethernet Virtual Interconnect (EVI), Multitenant Device Context (MDC) and various Comware v7 enhancements.

Continuing on the momentum of this strong performer ranking, our 2013 HP FlexFabric roadmap will continue to deliver significant new platforms and enhancements that deliver simplification, higher scaling, automated software-defined service delivery and disruptive economics for data center customers.
