“I want standards and I want them now!” In IT Speak Want Equates to Need

By Nick Watson, Vice President EMEA Enterprise Group, HP Networking

Nick Watson“Openness” this is what the head of fixed and mobile networks of a major Telco said he wanted when I had the opportunity to meet with him last week at Mobile World Congress.  For me, this is a massive vote of confidence in the drive to Open Standards, Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networks (SDN), OpenFlow, OpenStack and, in fact, all the things we at HP are proposing!

There is no doubt a sentiment of revolutionary change exists within this industry; solving problems of complexity, cost and proprietary lock-in with IT solutions where architectures can be defined independently of a specific manufacturer.

Increasingly the conclusion seems to be, not whether to adopt this approach, but given the current environment, how to get there at speed. This will require help from organizations who have a well proven capability with existing legacy systems, a clear strategy aligned to Open Standards and crucially, the resources to execute this strategy.

A recent Lippis Report clearly highlights the values of the open approach HP is taking towards enabling SDN and the virtual network framework for virtual applications – otherwise referred to as the HP Virtual Applications Network or VAN. HP’s openness here will enable interoperability and integration with other industry choice solutions from top vendors. HP’s Open SDN Ecosystem and AllianceOne partnerships will give rise to interoperable application-aware solutions which should offer simpler deployment on a wider range of infrastructure elements, provided they are not just based on open standards but also offer an open implementation of those standards.

HP has everything needed to take even the largest organization on this journey, offering consulting and program management, deep technology expertise and total commitment to customer success.
