Interbrand says HP is one of the top 5 leaders in environment sustainability
Have you read the latest Interbrand ranking of the top 50 companies? All are leaders driving environment sustainability awareness and recognizable programs to make a difference.
I work for HP and my first instinct was to see where HP was ranked amongst the leaders. Voila! There it was— ranked 5th among all the global companies on this list. From time to time, I have seen articles showcasing HPs efforts on “green” through our elegant employee portal. My curiosity stemmed from the fact that HP does not tout enough about its Good Samaritan efforts to the rest of the world.
My own research into the greening of HP
I did a little digging to learn a bit more about global efforts after reading about HP’s ranking. I am very aware of some of the innovations within HP networking portfolio. However, in my opinion, the corporate commitment and some of the facts are astounding. The list of recognition by various agencies and nonprofit organizations was equally long: Newsweek green ranking, Green Peace ranking, Cal Recycle, Green Enterprise IT award and many more.
Did you know HP consolidated 85 data centers to six energy efficient data centers helping reduce cost by 60%? Over 1000 HP products are certified for energy star, EPEAT or other eco guideline. By 2011 HP is committed to use 100 million pounds of recycled plastic in HP printing products.
I look around within the networking product portfolio I deal with every day. “Green” thinking is part of the R&D culture. Innovations in products, solutions and services are leading the approach to energy savings.
Green products
According to Miercom, fully loaded HP switches consume less power compared to industry average. In some cases the switches consume less than 50% of power per gigabit of data transferred. HP contributed to the development and governance of IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet standards. It was the first company to introduce products in the market with industry standard Energy Efficient Ethernet. The wireless products like MSM 460/466 deliver near wire like performance with the latest 802.11n standards, increasing the range from 30ft to over 200ft. This translates into less number of access points needed to cover a given area reducing the carbon foot print. Integrating services into the network switch like the 5400 or 8200, eliminates the need for having separate appliances reducing, cabling, carbon footprint, rack space and power consumed.
Green services
Not only does HP knows how to reduce 85 data centers to 6 energy efficient data centers, the expertise is offered as services:
- Facilities and technology assessment services
- Power and cooling analysis
- Energy efficiency analysis
- Thermal zone mapping
- Energy efficient design services
A commitment to “green”
A study conducted by HP showed GTower in Malaysia is 25% more energy efficient using HP energy efficient solutions compared to other similar buildings.
I am thrilled that HP gets another mention in “the” list. It certainly is a shot in the arm for HP to be recognized for its constant and consistent support of earth sustainable program from PC recycling to using recycled plastic for printers to innovations in the technology like energy efficient networking.
Please share your experiences and recognize the efforts of your company in making this world a better place for generations to come.
