Making the Switch - HP & Cisco Interoperability

Jeff Kabel, HP WW Technical Marketing Engineer

4-16-2011 8-45-07 AM.jpgNot to give away my age, but I have spent many a late night getting various infrastructure vendors equipment to work together. Many of which would probably join the ranks of museum quality antiques by today's standards.

Whether it was getting routers to properly peer via OSPF, or making LACP based link aggregation groups come up, every implementation had its own set of challenges and, well, hiccups.

Wouldn't it be great

… if someone did the research for me ahead of time and validated that these products actually worked together in the first place?  (saving me many late night hours of trial and error and more than one handful of my now graying hair!)

There is nothing worse than working on a problem only to find that it NEVER should have worked in the first place. You are in luck now!

No more gray hair

Our friends at Network Test, Inc., the interoperability experts, have worked hard to put together a concise guide that validates 13 different protocols between HP and Cisco switches, taking the guesswork out of making sure things will work.

Items tested include:

  • 4-16-2011 9-22-14 AM.jpghow IPv4  & IPv6 OSPF on a Cat 6K works with an HP A9500
  • how Rapid Spanning-Tree works on the Cat 4500 when connected to an HP E5400
  • how HP switches handle CDP traffic
  • how the Cisco switches play nice with HP when Setting up an 802.1Q Trunk

These are the little details that always seem to bite you in the hindquarters that David Newman and his crew at Network Test, Inc. have taken the time to painstakingly document for us.

More to come

4-16-2011 8-25-29 AM.jpgA detailed configuration guide will soon follow - giving you even more prescriptive particulars on how to make these two powerhouses play nice together. From real working configurations to validated feature settings, this guide will surely save you countless hours and get you pouring (insert choice beverage :smileyhappy:) instead of pouring through manuals into the wee hours of the morning.
