Well over one hundred networking professionals, practitioners and researchers attended the University of Toronto Networking Symposium that was held on October 25.  This symposium was a full day dive into the future of networking.

Five top networking thought leaders and senior research scientists from both HP and U of T delivered seven fascinating sessions about the future of networking. The major focus was on two hot networking topics:  Wireless and Software Defined Networking (SDN). ‘This event is about sharing the future of networking, and it’s an innovative collaboration between the vendor community and the research community’ said Marc Seeman, Solutions Architect Manager for HP Networking Canada, who kicked off the symposium.

Software Defined Datacenter (SDDC)

The first speaker of the day was Sarwar Raza, Director of Cloud Networking and SDN in Advanced Technology Group at HP. He energized the audience with the top five things that we need to know about Software Defined Data Centers (SDDC) - the data center of the future.

What is a SDDC?

Blog1d.jpg SDDC is a programmable interface that creates a unified interface across the data center to deliver dynamic and rapid deployment of traditional and cloud applications, giving the agility businesses need to respond to change and new market opportunities.

What are the components of SDDC?

The SDDC architecture consists of three layers, application layer, control layer and infrastructure layer. This applies business logic to systems behavior in dynamic fashion.

What are the benefits of SDDC?

The benefits of SDDC included but limited to:

  • Dynamic and rapid deployment of cloud applications
  • Increase IT efficiency with services automation and orchestration
  • Business agility and scalable service

Case studies were also given by Sarwar Raza to help audiences better understand how SDDC aligns IT to business needs.

Who can deliver SDDC?

Look for the vendor who is capable of:

  • Comprehensive portfolio/strategy and ecosystem
  • Open, common platform across the data center
  • Unique innovation

Take Software Defined claims with a pinch of salt

‘There are three major trends out there driving the marketplace.’ Sarwar Raza summarized, ‘the first trend is converged infrastructure, the second one is cloud, and the third one is what we talked about today, software-defined data center. I'm happy to say, HP has a leading position in all three of these, so we're extremely well positioned for where the market is going and its future.

We will continue to post blogs on the University of Toronto event and cover topics such as:

  • Wireless into the Future
  • New Paradigms for Multimedia and Security in Wireless Networks
  • Enabling Wireless Apps in the age of 802.11ac and Cloud
  • New Directions in Networking Research
  • Software Defined Networking: Architecting your Next Generation Network
  • SDN – Today and into the Future
