Family and friends. The very foundation of a happy and healthy life. And while it may be a bit of a cliché, when you work with someone for 10+ hours a day, they frequently join that list of “friends and family you treasure.” When something takes from you one of these treasured people, your natural reaction is to fight back, to battle against what ever has robbed you of the joy that vanishes with that family member or friend.
Remembering a member of our networking family
Brice Clark, a member of the HP family since 1972, battled cancer with the support of his friends and family. It turned out to be a battle he wasn’t destined to win. Brice was an incredible individual. He combined the technical skills, creativity and personality that made him a well-known leader in the high-tech networking industry and the driver behind many of the innovations pioneered by HP Networking. He was able to motivate and energize those he worked with. His ability to communicate with and challenge end-users, management, engineers and his peers was unique. He was truly a one-of-a-kind member of our family.
Joining the race against cancer
On October 24, 2005, ProCurve Networking lost this dear friend, a member of the family, to cancer. We decided to fight back. With Brice’s passing, we had the opportunity to work with Jim Northey, long-time friend of Brice’s and organizer of competitive mountain bike races across the country, to sponsor the Coolest 24 Hour Mountain Bike Race against Cancer. This seemed like the perfect way to channel our energy and our contributions to fight cancer.
Over the last seven years, we’ve had a few more members of the HP Networking family engage in their own fight against cancer. While most of them have won their battles so far, losing even one more friend to cancer is too high a price. Cancer is a battle we all need to stay engaged in and fight with whatever weapons we can find. The members of the HP Networking family all realize that contributions of time and money are nothing compared to parting with another friend lost to cancer.
This year, friends and family at HP Networking are joining together to once again sponsor the Coolest 24 Hour MTB Bike Race against Cancer. It’s a race we all need to win. If you are interested, please join in—to ride with us or donate what you can to the cause.
