What’s the point?
If you have a teenager at home, it is probably not an uncommon question to encounter. But this is a very important question for us to pose to ourselves once in a while. Very rarely we go through our entire careers without asking this question at some point.
Being a product manager, the traditional description of my job is: to gather requirements from customers, define the “right” product, forecast it, price it and bring it to market! The progress of networking technology absolutely fascinates me. The work culture at HP keeps me inspired. The challenge of helping produce the most reliable and industry leading products makes my workday something I can look forward to.
But once you have done any job enough times, you are bound to ask that question: what’s the point? When I had one such retrospective moment a few months ago, the question that kept popping up was this...
What’s the most meaningful part of the work I do?
As I pondered over this, I started recognizing that the most important part of my work is to bring joy to someone whom I will probably never get to see in person! Every time I drive a decision, it has direct or indirect impact on thousands of people across the globe!
If I spec the right product and define the right features, it could bring joy to some network administrator sitting in some corner of the world as it makes his or her life a little easier to deploy or manage the network. The product I define probably enables a mom to share her cooking tips to her daughter over video across continents, or it helps a teenager post that quirky comment on Facebook or a travelling dad (like me) play peek-a-boo with his toddler at home!
We thrive on your positive feedback.
Positive customer feedback is the fodder that gives meaning to our jobs! I have been in customer meetings where I was told. “That HP 5400 switch is so darn reliable that I don’t think I am going to buy another switch from HP until the next ice age.” When I hear this, I go “that’s MY moment! “
And that’s THE moment for hundreds of engineers at HP who make these products and solutions possible! That’s also THE moment for the partner who helped setup the network and ensured it runs smoothly. It is like a breeze of fresh air for those of us living in our cubicle worlds.
Very often in the humdrum of our day-to-day lives, we fail to pause and appreciate the most meaningful aspects of our jobs.
It is you, our customers, who make our jobs meaningful. It is the problems that you challenge us to solve that help us to do better. In your satisfaction lies not only our success but also the meaning for the phrase “HP Networking”! As someone once said, good companies look at competition; great companies look at customers.
So back to the question: what’s the most meaningful part of the work I do? It is YOU! THANK YOU!
