Leaving Las Vegas – and the classic VAR behind

This week I write on departure from our Global Partner Conference (HPGPC) in Las Vegas. It is my last action before I drift into a long and recuperative sleep on the plane home to England (I hope!).  Each year it is amazing to gather all the latest feedback from our partners and reflect on the new trends and directions in the market. It seems that this year, almost without exception, the conversations centered on the transformation of the classic reseller model to the hybrid of technology integrator plus service provider capability. The marketplace, buying patterns and provision models are changing faster than I have ever seen in my IT career

Use less storage, says HP!

Big data is one of the big topics of the day with no shortage of statistics and predictions illustrating just how much data we will have to manage in the near future. Some of the organisations I speak to expect the amount of data they generate to double in just the next twelve months. For a storage guy, this sounds like great news, because not only is the volume of data increasing exponentially, but so is the velocity and variety of that data. And all of it will need to be stored, right? Not necessarily. What interests me is whether we can reach a point where the rate of data generation is continuing to increase, but the storage capacity trajectory is slowing down…and maybe even decreasing.

Why is this storage guy getting so caught up in NFV?

This time around, I want to focus on the topic of technology disruption. I’m really beginning to sense there is “change in the air” in the IT space. One good example: the annual technology showcase at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona was a gathering of thought leaders and change agents discussing technology convergence, or Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). This looks very disruptive. In the words of Bill Veghte, HP’s EVP of the Enterprise Group “the NFV opportunity is one of the single most significant shifts the telecommunications industry has experienced in 20 years.”
