Shooting to the Moon with AMD Processors and HP Servers

There is a lot of excitement at AMD about the HP Project Moonshot announcement!  We have been involved with HP’s Pathfinder Innovation Ecosystem since its founding in 2011.  We chose to be a founding member because AMD and HP shared a vision of the data center of the future. AMD and HP both recognized that data centers would be filled with high density, power efficient servers, and that these servers would house a variety of different types of CPUs large and small, x86 and ARM. HP’s Moonshot System fills this market need and we are proud to be a leading contributor to the HP Moonshot ecosystem.

 

Later this year, AMD will deliver the world’s first AMD Opteron™ x86 APU, codenamed “Kyoto” as part of HP’s Moonshot.   The HP Moonshot System is particularly well suited for “Kyoto.”  “Kyoto’s” high integration and low power consumption (as low as 11 watts) coupled with the integrated GPU engine will enable solutions that help dramatically lower TCO for data centers running a variety of workloads where graphics and visualization are important – things like hosted desktop, online gaming, and image processing, to name a few.

 

Like HP, AMD believes that a major step forward was needed in server system architecture to move the data center forward to better accommodate the workload of today.  Data center and cloud facility owners can’t afford bloated power bills or wasted valuable rack space. Networking, storage, fans, and power supplies need to be shared and heavily utilized to gain maximum efficiency—as opposed to the traditional approach of replication many times over and left in low utilization states.  Dense compute architectures like HP’s Moonshot System demonstrate a better way to go. Low power, small footprint processors like AMD’s “Kyoto” are the ideal complement to this type of system architecture.  This combination of more efficient compute nodes and more efficient platform architectures represents a huge step forward for IT. 

 

The days of the ‘one size fits all’ data center are over. Customers now have choices—to match their workload to processors and to match their requirements to different server systems. HP’s Moonshot system offers the right amount of compute – and the right *kind* of compute – with excellent power and space efficiency.  This is a game changer and AMD is excited about the return of disruptive innovation to the server world!
